Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu

reached semis there!

WTA Miami, Main Draw:

(32)Zakopalova vs bye
Baltacha vs Bammer
Jovanovski vs Niculescu
(6)Jankovic vs bye

Not good, not bad, but round one is feasable!

I hope for a match against JJ!

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu

WTA Miami, First Round:

Monica Niculescu def. Bojana Jovanovski 6:1 7:6(2)

Moni warded a set point at 5-6 in the second set off!

BP convention:
BoJo: 5/18
Moni: 8/9

That says it all!

There was even one game in the first set where BoJo already wasted 10 break points in a row!
And very strong on return today, but Bojana seems to have no serve at all...

Now upset JJ!

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu

WTA Miami, Round 2:

(6)Jelena Jankovic def. Monica Niculescu 6:3 6:1

At least one competitive set!
An upset would be more than anybody could expect of her.

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu

(7)Roberta Vinci (ITA) v Sandra Zahlavova (CZE)
Qualifier v Monica Niculescu (ROU)
Johanna Larsson (SWE) v Agnes Szavay (HUN)
Qualifier v (2/wc)Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS)

Well a qualifier will not be that easy I guess. That player has already played and won 3 matches on clay.

I wouldn't say clay is Monica's best surface at all. She is rather atypical of the Romanians in that way. I'd actually say her best surface is grass. The grass rewards her game a lot as her slices and dropshots stay really low and she is able to get to the net to volley more. Also her serve is less of a liability on grass than on any other surface. When Monica had been slumping badly for the 1st half of last year it was at Wimbledon where she was able to snap out of it. Oh and the best match I have ever seen Monica play was at Wimbledon against Magda Rybarikova in 2008. This was an amazing match.

But really Monica can play well on any surface if she is playing well and she can struggle on any surface when she is not. Hopefully Monica will be able to carry over her fine form of March onto the clay season though. I hope so. Monica has very few points to defend from last years clay season so if she does do well she should easily get into the top 50 by the start of the grass season and maybe even before RG.

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu

I was also wondering because she had more success on grass, but Moni herself likes clay the most!

I really do think one needs to take the ITF page favourite surfaces thing with a large grain of salt. Those answers tend to be very old from when a player was just starting her career.

According to the ITF site, Alex Dulgheru's favourite surface is hard.
