Very close match and a great overall performance for Monica against world's No. 3 (apart from serving to stay in the first and the decisive set). Lucky net for Na Li at MP No.3.
Yeah, totally. Would really have been nice to see Monica win this match but plus side was that Monica played really well for the vast majority of the match. The two most positive things were the serve has improved a lot. Sure she got broken a few times, and a couple of them were a crucial stages, but her opponent isn't top 5 for nothing. For the most part the serve looked very solid and even when she was broken it often wasn't directly related to the serve but the result of what happen in their rallies.
The other positive aspect was how well Monica maintained her equilibrium throughout. She never got down on herself when she played a bad point or lost an important game and not once did she go into freefall mode. Throughout the whole match she played each point on its merit. Even in the last game down 0-40 Monica didn't lose her cool and if not for that unlucky netcord she could very well have found herself at deuce in that game and who knows what could have happened from there.
And of course she came into this match with two nice come from behind 3 setter wins. I'd say, both the mental aspects and the serving aspects of Monica's game, in other words the two things that have been her biggest liabilities throughout most of her career, are looking stronger than at anytime in Monica's career. I have good vibes for the year ahead.
I expected this to be closer than many expected, but not that she really could take a set here.
I guess it's far too early to say how this year will turn out for her, also because the matches she has played this week still show some heavy ups and downs.
Good luck in Australia now!
Yeah, but what was nice in the 1st two matches is that she got better as the matches wore on and never got down on herself when behind. And even today the same thing can be said that she never got down on herself when behind, and this does bode well for the future, even if it didn't result in a win today.
I saw the match today in the court,Monica had great improvemen on her serve, she could serve about 160KMH now,and she played very well today, forehand slice just made Na very uncomfortable.
