She needs some confidence before RG.
I have a hard time thinking about this match as a success for Monica. More likely Erakovic gave it away with her 100 double faults and 1000 other errors. Don't read too much into it.

Routine.

Playing a close friend is always tough. Glad she fought through this time.
Her draw opened up nicely, she better take advantage of it.

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu

Even a bigger mess today as she lost 64 36 26.

What I find funny about this match is that in the first set Monica was 5-0 up after 15 minutes of play with Tatishvili not winning even one point on her own serve.

The rest is silence.

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu

Reminds me of the Vesnina match from Oeiras.

She is completely hopeless on clay. I watched parts of her match against Erakovic and found out that it's actually more a matter of the higher bounce than the actual slowness of the surface.

When I see her playing in Luxemboug, her game looks unplayable how she is digging out these balls, redirecting the pace with ease, going to the net, not giving her opponent any rhythm and all that is happening so fast that her opponent really has no clue what is going on.

On clay, he surprise effect only holds for 15 minutes. Her serve begs to be put away, her drop shots are dropping far too long, her slice loses all its bite and as she doesn't hit with any topspin to open up the court, nor making use of any angles, it's basically impossible for her to finish a neutral rally with a winner on her own.
Most rallies see her in the defensive from the 1st shot and although she is still retrieving exceptionally well, it's like her opponent is pushing her far and farer behind the baseline to finish most of them with an easy put away sooner or later.

Ooh Monica Losing against Tathisvili isn't promising for RG

First match in RG against Johanna Larsson.

Possible second round against Sorana. But I don't see that happening.

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu

Slicing to Larsson's backhand should be enough to get the win here.

This has mugathon written all over, though.

I don't have much hope for Monica giving the way she's been playing.

Me neither. Larsson is a pretty good draw really. But the way Monica has been playing I think she probably needs an ultragood draw, someone like Paszek or Rus or Tatishvili. Oh wait, even Tatishvili beat her last week. Yeah...Monica on clay really is a case of "abandon all hope all ye who enter here."
