Well done, Monica!

61 63 and she'll take on Vesnina in the 2nd round.

like a servebot.

Vesnina is a good match-up for her. I expect a close match with Monica hopefully being more efficient than in the 2nd set today.

Actually, undefeated on clay since last year's RG

I really hope she has a good clay season. This girls deserves it and she can do it. She was a semifinalist in Estoril two years ago, she can do it again!

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu

By the way, Monica entered WTA Nürnberg on clay instead of WTA Birmingham on grass.

She is really going for the dirt.

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu

She has never played more than one warm up event prior to Wimbledon and also has never played in Birmingham before.
Pretty sure she will enter Rosmaelen the week after to get ready for the grass.

I guess she is expecting a tank fest and I'm very certain that the draw in Nurnberg will fall apart like it does in every clay MM past French Open.
Might be a clever choice.

4*-1 in the 2nd set and 0/6 on BPs saved.

Not shocked. I don't think she choked, Vesnina must have played better and better as the sets went.

The leads were actually 3-0 and 4-1, both sets two breaks up.

Not really. Monica has all her optional events up to 70 ranking points now so she needs more than 70 ranking points to increase her ranking at any event she plays aside from the mandatory ones. In other words Monica needs semis or better just to pick up more points now. Could she do it in Nurnberg? Maybe, but I think she would have just as good if not a better chance at Rosmalen. And I don't really think the outside chance that Monica might reach a semi here and pick up 60 ranking points for the effort justifies her not preparing as well as she can to do well at Wimbledon, a slam I believe she could have great success at.

Basically, anything less than a semi here and Monica has wasted a week in which she could have been preparing her grass game. I don't like this decision at all.
