Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu

She's still Top 100 in the Race and she has nothing to defend next year. Bad luck with injuries, but that seems to be normal for players from Romania when they reached their ranking peak.

I don't see a reason why she can't get back into the Top 50 next year, especially because most matches I've seen so far on her favourite surface Hard Court has been abyssmal.

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu

I've just realized Monica is somehow back to her peak ranking of #29 not having played for a couple of weeks, not having won back to back matches since forever...

Now, imagine she could have had played a bit more and stayed fit.

Hey Hian! Oh, banned again...

By the way, the seeds for tomorrow are announced and confirmed, Monica is IN and will play.

And if she's failing early she has enough time to prepare for the Golden Tashkent slam where she is Top seed.

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu

US Open, Main Draw:

(8)Wozniacki - Begu
Soler - Q
Pironkova - Giorgi
Morita - (27)Niculescu

OK, this could have been much worse, actually.

Still, I don't expect anything from her. H2H 1-0 for Ayumi 6-1 6-3

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu

It's a quite soft draw. Perfect to make a thunderous comeback !

Morita has been horrible lately so who knows. And I would love a FH slice fest in R2 against Pironkova

And don't forget - she is the best player you've never heard of.

^
For the curious ones, like me, Curcubeu is referring to Jon Wertheim U.S. Open women's seed report

The bookies give her and Morita approximately equal odds.
They wouldn't give her like 50% chance if she couldn't play after the hand problem.

Monica has a lot of points to defend so she'll try her best.
I can see a win coming, if she will not retire of course.

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu

I might me harsh but I'll be so mad at her if she loses. Morita has to be the worst top 100 player I have ever seen : no big FH, BH or serve, not particularly consistent, not a great mover. At least Cohen and Yakimova get a lot of balls back. I still wonder how the hell she got to the top 50.

PS : Now that I think about it, all of the above also applies to Alex the lesser But she has a fierce personality at least.

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu

First match back after an injury break is always tough, less than 40% 1st serves, c'mon.

Already won as many games as she did during their last encounter, though...

That's unusual indeed. But maybe she's trying to go for a bigger 1st serve... ?
