Good call. Monica has a good record against BSZ and she too prefers the fast surfaces. I imagine Monica must be delighted to finally be off the clay and back playing on a fast surface.

It's been a bad slump but as of now not an incredibly long one. If Monica can end the slump right now it would be super.

Let's recall that the biggest and longest slump of Monica's career, one that lasted from February 2009 all the way until June 2010, and left her ranking in the 140s. This slump ended at Wimbledon, where she qualified and then went on the beat Dulko in the 1st round. After that Monica didn't look back and proceeded to move up and up the rankings until setting into the top 30 in February of this year, when she began her recent slump with that awful performance in Dubai.

So...the big hope is that once again grass will come to Monica's rescue and she will be able to put the last few months behind her. This win against Barbora is a definately a good start and hopefully we will continue to see more positive results now she is back on what I still regard as potentially her best surface. That said, next match against Vinci who can match Monica slice for slice will be a real toughy.

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu

At least she made it competitive. The bagel is a bit embarrassing but Vinci is excellent on grass so...

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu

I watched the match and the 3rd set was much closer than the scoreline, it's just very hard for Monica to win long matches on grass, because her serve is degenerating much too fast and it's harder to break.

Fun match, though, with plenty of variety and many points decided on the net. Monica led in the 2nd by 5*-2, but decided to pack in some drama.

I was at Roehampton today so I wasn't able to see the match. When I saw the scoreline I was happy Monica at least took a set but was a bit alarmed by the 3rd set scoreline but I'm glad it that set was more competitive than the score indicated.

Yeah, Monica's game is really does come into it's own on fast surfaces and she does play totally differently to how she does on clay or slow hardcourts. Her fastcourt matches are so often great fun to watch. And today against Roberta must have been very cool indeed. I love matches when you have two girls who both play with lots of imagination and use the whole court up against each other. Nothing beats matches where you have point after point of crafty cat and mouse exchanges and I'm guessing that's what this one was probably like.

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu

Wimbledon, Main Draw:

[1] Maria Sharapova (RUS) v Anastasia Rodionova (AUS)
[Q] Vesna Dolonc (SRB) v Tsvetana Pironkova (BUL)
Hsieh Su-Wei (TPE) v [WC] Virginie Razzano (FRA)
Stephanie Foretz Gacon (FRA) v [29] Monica Niculescu (ROU)

Stephanie is a decent grass court player like Monica, but she suffered a horrible loss in Eastbourne Q. I guess Monica has her chances and I want that possible R2 match against Hsieh so badly.
