LYON (Reuters) - Amélie Mauresmo aims at a place in the last square of Masters of tennis, which begin on next 3 November, a good result in Los Angeles which can improve the one season assessment that the number one Frenchwoman judges "mitigated".
"I carried out a large preparation in order to return as well as possible in Masters, to try to pass qualificative [round-robin] for the semi-finals", declared Mauresmo, of passage in the Lyons suburbs, with Rillieux-the-Pope where one afternoon with the young people of the club of the city was organized.
At the time of these Masters, the players will test a well-known formula of the boys, that of three [round-robin] matches, whereas the female tournament was played up to now by direct elimination, a defeat indicating the door of exit immediately.
"The system by round-robin is new for us. There is the right to the error since it is not eliminatory. That will be interesting to see how each one will react compared to that. What is also interesting, it is that a minimum of three is made matches and that one can have a rise to power ", explained the seventh world player. "It will be a good experiment."
"Masters do not require a specific preparation because one is accustomed to having great appointments in the year. There are four Grand Slams to play and of the important tournaments. This one is a tournament as well as those of the Grand Slam, which one prepares in the same way."
"OF THE GOOD AND AT LEAST GOOD"
Victorious this year of the only tournament of Warsaw, well far from her principal rivals, Amélie Mauresmo does not want however to release any favorite for this test of end of season.
"It there not really of favorite, even if the two Belgians (Justine Henin- Hardenne and Kim Clijsters, n°1 and 2 world) are very strong. _ it there be a Belgian in each group, it be necessary play its good tennis and it be it that I me endeavour to do", she said.
"My objective is to arrive in semi-final initially. But for me, the objective, it is also and especially the next season."
Because the year 2003 was in half-tone for that which had reached the fourth rank of the international hierarchy at the end of the last season.
"My season, I judge it mitigated enough. I made the quarterfinals in two Grand Slams and I missed two of them. There is good and at least good, with wounds but also the first victories over the sisters Williams this year. I draw a relatively correct assessment within sight of the months that I passed wounded ", she relativizes it.
In 2003, the last great appointment of the year will be for Amélie Mauresmo and her coéquipières of the team of France, the final phase of the Fed Cup, which begins on November 17 in Moscow and where the girls of Guy Forget will find Russia, Belgium and the United States.
"In Fed Cup, there is the ambition to go until the end. One knows that it will not be easy, in particular the semi-final against Russia at it. I felt the first steps of this semi-final when I played the final of Moscow against a Russian (Anastasia Myskina).
"A my opinion, that will not be easy", she concluded.
