Navratilova predicts Mauresmo will scoop Wimbledon title

Navratilova predicts Mauresmo will scoop Wimbledon title
June 17, 2004

LONDON (AFP) - Nine-time champion Martina Navratilova believes French hope Amelie Mauresmo can take advantage of an injury-depleted field to capture her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon .

Navratilova said Mauresmo can benefit from the omission of Belgian duo Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin-Hardenne.

"The question marks over the health of so many top players makes this year's women's singles more open than it has been for years," Navratilova told The Guardian newspaper.

"There is one person who has avoided the injury curse, however, and she is Mauresmo. On that basis I make her my favourite for the title," she said of the clay-court specialist who reached the semi-finals in 2002.

"Mauresmo has been playing great tennis this year and if she can stay healthy, probably has a better shot than anybody.

"She can certainly adapt to the conditions and has started to make an effort to be more attacking this year. "On grass she will find that so much easier, especially coming in behind her penetrating serve," said the Wimbledon legend. Navratilova believes fourth seed Mauresmo can suceed at the All England Lawn Tennis club because she doesn't have to cope with the expectations of a partisan crowd, which always seems to hurt her chances of winning the French Open at Roland Garros.

Oh, c'mon, is a grown-up girl...articles like that don't make her stressed that much, there are so many other factors, that make her tense...
And besides, she knows excatly that now she has the greatest chance ever to win Wimbledon...

but i hate the word "scoop" here...it just doesn't suit...Amelie ain't gonna scoop anything, because she deserves to win!!!!!!
