Tennis: Mauresmo triumphs in Rome "with the heart" Sunday May 16, 9:01 PM(Yahoo) ROME (Reuters)

- Relegating to the past three unfruitful finals, Amélie Mauresmo on Sunday finally won the Italain Open beating Jennifer Capiati at the finish, 3-6 6-3 7-6 (8-6). The Frenchwoman, the number two seed, was right of her adversary at the end of a marathon of 2h30 during which she saved a match-point at 5-4 in the 3rd set. Already victorious in Berlin last week, Amélie Mauresmo, World No.3, is posed into favorite for Roland Garros, which begins on May 24th. Never completely released, feverish with the service (nine double-faults), the Frenchwoman always ran after the score. In the third set, after having wasted considerable break-balls, she found herself down 4-2. Nervous in her turn, Capriati, the number 5 seed, had not been able to maintain her advantage. Then, the American missed a match point at 5-4 on the service of her adversary to the continuation of a long exchange lost. In the tie-break, Amélie Mauresmo got a first match point at 6 points to 5, but Capriati pushed back the threat with a splendid forehand passing shot. But to 6-7, the American returned the weapons by losing an interminable exchange.

SUCCESS DEDICATED TO HER LATE FATHER

"This final, I have won it with the heart, I did not want to remain on a fourth defeat here", explained Amélie Mauresmo. "The level of play, at the beginning, was incredible. Paradoxically, I think that I played better last year against Kim Clijsters but I am satisfied with my reaction when the things did not go very well. The match point, I saved it in a good manner. "It is the second time in the season, after Justine Henin-Hardenne in Amélia Island, that I won a match while saving a match point, it is of good forecasts before Roland-Garros." Amélie Mauresmo dedicated this success to her father (note: deceased in mid-March), "who is somewhere up there", she said. "It was much more moving that my mum was in the stands. For the first time, she accompanied me during the whole week", she underlined. The Frenchwoman is aware that she will approach Roland-Garros in the position of favorite. "In any case, whatever happened in Rome, I have a lot of pressure in Paris. So win as much before! I am serene, I have lots of confidence, I have desire for letting me carry while keeping in mind all these difficult moments that I have managed this week. "That will enable me to draw energy in the delicate moments at Roland-Garros", she explained.
