Amelie Mauresmo of France said Friday that she has withdrawn from the upcoming Pacific Life Open due to a recurring back injury.
Mauresmo, who is currently ranked third in the world, was a quarterfinalist at event last year and would have been making her third appearance in Indian Wells, California.
"I am truly disappointed that I will have to miss the Pacific Life Open," said Mauresmo. "The setting at Indian Wells is one of the most beautiful in the world. Unfortunately, I will have to let another two weeks pass before I am ready for competition."
Mauresmo, who also withdrew from the Open Gaz de France tournament in her host country earlier in February, has not played since being forced to pull out of the Australian Open in January. Mauresmo injured her back during her stay in Melbourne and was forced to withdraw prior to her quarterfinal encounter against Fabiola Zuluaga.
The 24-year-old Mauresmo is hoping to return to the courts in time for the NASDAQ-100 Open, which will commence March 24 in Miami, Fla.
