What no thread for the 16 year old Karolina Pliskova?

Karolina got a WC for Prague and has made the QF

R1 def Molik 6-4 6-4
R2 def Kanepi (8) 1-6 6-3 7-5

Edie: Thread for both Karolina & Krystina:D

I watched Krystina win today. The match was extremely close until 5-5. Then Ysaline basically lost her cool and started shouting and complaining non stop. She threw her racquet at the change of ends too. I don't get why she was so angry. Karolina was sitting next to me (well, I sat next to her :p) until she left at about 3-3. Krystina was really good - cool, calm, effective. No trouble at all after 5-5.

I also watched the end of Sachia Vickery today against Cepelova - not very convincing, mostly because she had an injury that was really bothering her and then late in the second set she seemed to get ANOTHER injury. I would expect Krystina to win this match!

I will say that Kris has the better game, but as everyone has said, she's not as mentally tough as her sister.

Although I'm beginning to suspect that she may be mentally tougher at slams.

Hey guys, today was actually the first time I've watched Krystina and I have a question.

The reason I never bothered to watch her was that I figured she would just be a bad version of Karolina (more errors, worse serve or less power). But watching her today I saw basically no difference between her and Karolina (except the leftie thing). I mean her serve is maybe slightly less lethal than Karolina's, but not by much. If anything, her movement might be a little better than Karolina.

This got me wondering - why is she so much less successful? I know they're both young, but still. Anyway, as I said, I know nothing about this girl. If anybody can give me any opinions I would be really grateful :-D

Well if you look up Krystina's matches from 2014 and 2015, she lost a lot of three setters. I think it's just mental for her, Karolina is more steady mentally and raises her game in critical moments. Krystina lost a lot of tight matches.

I'm glad she's playing well this year and looks more confident than previous years. I can't wait to see both sisters in the top 20 regularly.

Wow, when I last looked, Kris was down a set, and she kept mentally tough to close it out at 75 in the third

Who is this person?

First main draw appearance here in 3 years.

Gluck against Stosur. If she had to get a seed, it's good it was Sam, who has nerves of dust at the AO.

#2,484 ·
@Katja. Don't you like Stosur?

I haven't quite connected with Kristyna as I have with Karolina, having observed her inability to rally as well as her sister (her injury today notwithstanding). But she does have some interesting variety in her game, with the sort of old-school slice and dice that she showed today. I still root for her to at least get on level terms with Karo. Great win today! :D

Yes, I switched on the match thinking "wtf is Sam doing against some ITF player", an hour later I'm emotionally invested in Kristyna. Just sort of how everything felt stacked against her in this match, but she somehow came through.

I can't really give you a detailed reasoning for anything much, let alone her game compared to Karolinas, sometimes players just (in this case literally) hobble into my heart. Typically me that that happens with the identical twin sister who's not winning. :help:

I never quite connected with Karolina's tennis much to be honest, but found her very likeable (in the runner-up speeches after her losses to Angie, sorry :hysteric:) when she speaks, nothing like her on-court persona, very warm and kind.

Saw this coming.

Kris :yeah:

First time in the second round here in three years.

I didn't see the match. She's dealing with an injury? That's not good. Still gluck to her against Sydney finalist Monica Puig.

Karo got back Birrell, 4 & 4, but she needs to cut down her UFE ratio is she want to beat Julia Goerges.

Currently 1-0 against Julia, and that went to three in a non-slam event. Karo has yet to show she can break out in slams, and Julia has 4th round points to defend.

Time to bring it!

Kristyna just took the first set over Puig. :)

*2-3 in the 2nd set. It's really a serve competition at the moment, there has been just one BP in the whole match. Puig is (maybe not that surprising) the dominant player when they actually do play a rally, but Kristyna does a good job so far of preventing that as often as possible. I think her leg might still be bothering her a bit, she's not moving too well.

*3-4.

Ugh, Puig suddenly reading her serve well..30-30.
Pheeew, fantastic return by Puig but then an UE. 40-30.
These returns are killing me. Deuce.
BP :(
And broken. Going 3.

Brainfart on my part, Puig still has to serve it out.
Kristyna gets to Deuce with a great return.
Another one, BP!
UE Puig :cheer: *4-5!

4 great serves, love hold! 5-5*

Not a good return game, 3 bad returns and on the 4th she hits a good one but immediately shanks a forehand. *5-6

Insane servebottery. :hearts: Tiebreak

She's hit 5 aces with her last 7 serves. She needs it though, her groundstrokes are ... not good at the moment. 2-2*
Puig double faults, 4 more great serves Kristyna! *3-2
Very loose return by Puig, *4-2
Service Winner! 5-2*
A return point now would be huge.
Ace Puig. 5-3*
UE PUIG! 3 MP for Krisytina!
She has a putaway at the net and plays a dropshit. :banghead:
She choked both her service points.
6-6.....
*6-7.
Horrible end to the set. Going 3 and I don't wanna watch anymore.

I just recovered from the disappointment only to see her not use a 0-30 on Puig's serve. Her serve is back to where it was before she was close to winning though. 3-2*

2 BP...
I don't really see a way for her to win this match with her nerves. Would need Puig to help her, but Puig has been completely error-free when she is with her back to the wall. *3-3

4-3*

30-30 on Puig's serve again...
Kristyna drives a 2nd serve return 5m wide.
*4-4 :(

The serve keeps working so far. 5-4* We need Puig errors.

We're not getting them, instead Kris is missing basic shots. *5-5

Phew. Her service games are getting tense, she has basically just her serve and prayer left. But 6-5*

No chances. Needs Puig DFs. *6-6

00-15 Rally
15-15 Service Winner
30-15 Service Winner
30-30 Rally
40-30 Ace
7-6* Ace

Kris won a rally, 15-30...
30-30.
FH Winner Kris, MP #4...
FH Slice 2m wide. Deuce.
Puig with a terrible dropshit error, MP #5
Gone.
AD Puig.
Deuce.
AD Puig. A DF by Puig would be her only chance.
*7-7

And now her serve is gone.
2 BP Puig...
One saved.
Broken.

BP...
Terrible UE.
MP Puig.
Well saved. She can play when she doesn't think she could win this.
And then a terrible UE.

She lost. In the most heartbreaking way imaginable.

Kristyna has lost far too many of these close matches.

If you look at the past 12-18 months, she has lost so many matches after winning the first set. That has really inhibited her from progressing into the top 100. :(

And there really shouldn't be any reason why she shouldn't be there when she legitimately has some of the best weapons in the game (serve & forehand). Those are outweighed by her poor movement/court coverage and a mental block in these close matches. :[

#2,495 ·
You could really see it in the end how much of it was nerves. As long as she was within milimeters of winning the way her rallying was just abysmal, when she was down 0-30 in the last game she suddenly played good points, until she had BP...and went back to being bad. :(

#2,501 ·
Kris why couldn't you convert one of those 5 match points :banghead:

Still this was another very positive slam experience. The only problem though is that the last time she lost a slam match with match point, she went on an epic losing streak, receding all of her momentum.

Hopefully she doesn't do that this time.
