I can't believe there wasn't a thread for one of Ukraine's rising stars.

She's born on 12 September 1994. She's the reigning junior Roland Garros Champion and has been the ranked number 1 on the ITF circuit. On the professional tour, she has also made the finals of a 25K losing to another talented teenager, Lyuda Kichenok. Her highest WTA ranking is 548.

Let's all cheer for her as she rises up the rankings soon and be a real star on the WTA tour!

Well, it's over. Elina wins 6-1 4-6 6-4. She'll face either Voegele or Pironkova in R2. As a side note, Voegele has defeated my favorites 4 times since the end of last year(Sloane twice and Julia and Elina last week). Hopefully, Elina doesn't get bitten by Voegele in back-to-back weeks as Sloane did if she plays her.

I thought the same... and do hope so too. Poor Ukraine.

After that second set, thought she could win it. I hope her city stays peaceful.
Not to get too political, but since it was rightfully brought up, I don't want Elina going home. Granted, yesterday was a horrible accident and tragedy, but with all the uneasiness in Ukraine, I am scared it might be a plane she is on or a building she is in. Is there any place she can stay at while this tries to get resolved?

I agree she is playing well considering the situation in Ukraine. Could say the same for Dolgopolov.

I don't want to continue to bring this up, but Kharkiv is under separatist control. The victims are being transported by train to Kharkiv.

Before that they could say Russia is only interested in Crimea. Who knows how far this will go. She could train in Nice if her city gets invaded.

Donetsk and Luhansk are the worrying areas. And Crimea of course.
I think the Russians did this in hope there would be foreign intervention in Ukraine, so that in turn they could involve themselves to "defend Russian interests". Kind of like how North Korea wants someone to fight.

I dont think Russia wants an open war. They just want to grab the gas resources and they are using the separatists to get it. Once they have it they will call for peace again.
