I can't believe there wasn't a thread for one of Ukraine's rising stars.

She's born on 12 September 1994. She's the reigning junior Roland Garros Champion and has been the ranked number 1 on the ITF circuit. On the professional tour, she has also made the finals of a 25K losing to another talented teenager, Lyuda Kichenok. Her highest WTA ranking is 548.

Let's all cheer for her as she rises up the rankings soon and be a real star on the WTA tour!

I adore Petra so I don't mind much but I was expecting a bit more from Elina today.
She seems more frustrated than usual. Maybe it's the weather in Wuhan, I would hate to be in a hot polluted place like that.

Eviscerated by Petra once again

The sad part is that the final score is actually rather kind to her, considering how dominant Petra was. It was clear from the very first game that this match would not end well for Elina.

When will she learn that feeding Petra short, loopy balls anywhere near the center of the court (including on serve) is a recipe for disaster?

She did seem a bit flat, for whatever reason. But I think most of her frustration came from feeling utterly helpless/overpowered against her opponent today. If anything, I would expect hot & humid conditions like today to affect Petra more than her.

Elina has beaten the world #1 (again) and no one cares :sobbing:

Okay, Kerber hit an unusually high number of UEs and was surprisingly unclutch at crunch time, but it's still a very nice win (I was there when Elina came close to beating her in Montreal)

But seriously, Elina's been fairly aggressive with the forehand in her last two matches (Lisicki, Kerber), which is nice to see :yeah:

Also, her court coverage is as impressive as ever

Elina after learning that her match is the only women's QF not to be be scheduled on center court

Hope the :rain: won't be there all day (or that her match will be moved, but thanks to Beijing being a mixed event the cc schedule is already packed)

Her match started several hours late because of the rainy weather, but Elina is through to the Beijing SF after a 7-6(3) 6-1 win over Gavrilova :yeah:

In the first set, she had something like 6 set points in two different games (all on Gavrilova's serve) but couldn't capitalize, so winning the TB was key. In the second set, she was hitting more freely.

5/15 on BP opportunities for the entire match (though to be fair Gavrilova hit some of her best serves when facing those break points...)

Next for her will be either Radwanska (H2H: 0-3) or Shvedova (H2H: 0-1)

Glad she managed to turn the second set into a fight. Looked for a few games like the rout was on.
Still disappointed with the result, but I will focus on those sweet rallies where she was out-Againg Aga instead. Always knew she had the soul of a junkballer. :worship:
I have a feeling next year is gonna be pretty good!

It was disappointing to see her choking to Radwanska again - she CAN beat her, she just needs to find a way to overcome that mental hurdle...

It's been obvious for a while that she's working hard to add to her game and is trying to play smart(er) tennis, so I have a good feeling for 2017 too :)

Match stats:

Decent success rate at the net, just slightly below Radwanska's - she's not a natural volleyer, but her net play is definitely improving, and I hope she keeps working at it.

Elina Svitolina and Multiple #1 Upsets

Last week in Beijing, Elina Svitolina beat new WTA #1 Angelique Kerber. It was the first time the Ukrainian defeated Kerber this season, but it wasn’t her first 2016 triumph over a player ranked #1. At the Rio Olympics in August, Svitolina upset then-top-ranked Serena Williams.

It’s unusual for a player to face two (or more) different #1-ranked opponents in the same season. Since 1985, it has happened 136 times on the WTA tour and 148 times on the ATP tour. That’s less than five times per season per tour.

Of course, it’s much less common to upset multiple #1-ranked opponents, as Svitolina did. This was only the 16th time a woman did so (again, since 1985), while it has happened on the men’s side 18 times.

Here is a full list of WTA player-seasons that featured defeats of more than one top-ranked player:

Year Player Upsets
2016 Elina Svitolina Kerber; Serena
2010 Samantha Stosur Serena; Wozniacki
2009 Venus Williams Serena; Safina
2008 Dinara Safina Henin; Sharapova; Jankovic
2006 Justine Henin Davenport; Mauresmo
2003 Justine Henin Serena; Clijsters
2002 Kim Clijsters Serena; Venus
2002 Serena Williams Capriati; Venus
2001 Lindsay Davenport Capriati; Hingis
1999 Amelie Mauresmo Hingis; Davenport
1999 Venus Williams Davenport; Hingis
1997 Amanda Coetzer Hingis; Graf
1996 Jana Novotna Graf; Seles
1996 Kimiko Date Krumm Graf; Seles
1991 Martina Navratilova Graf; Seles
1991 Gabriela Sabatini Graf; Seles

It’s quite an accomplished list. As we might expect, there’s a lot of overlap between the players who achieved these upsets and past and future #1-ranked players. The real standouts here are Justine Henin and Venus Williams, who managed the feat twice, and Dinara Safina, who faced three different #1s in 2008, going undefeated against them.

Here are the men who beat multiple #1s in the same season:

Year Player Upsets
2013 Juan Martin Del Potro Nadal; Djokovic
2012 Andy Murray Federer; Djokovic
2011 David Ferrer Nadal; Djokovic
2011 Jo Wilfried Tsonga Nadal; Djokovic
2010 Marcos Baghdatis Nadal; Federer
2009 Juan Martin Del Potro Nadal; Federer
2008 Andy Murray Nadal; Federer
2008 Gilles Simon Nadal; Federer
2003 Rainer Schuettler Roddick; Agassi
2003 Fernando Gonzalez Hewitt; Agassi
2001 Greg Rusedski Safin; Kuerten
2001 Max Mirnyi Safin; Kuerten
1995 Michael Chang Agassi; Sampras
1992 Richard Krajicek Courier; Edberg
1991 Guy Forget Edberg; Becker
1991 Andrei Cherkasov Edberg; Becker
1990 Boris Becker Lendl; Edberg
1988 Boris Becker Wilander; Lendl

This list isn’t quite as impressive, though it does capture several very good players at their best. It also highlights the world-beating potential of Max Mirnyi, who–despite never reaching the top 15 himself–finished the 2001 season with a 3-1 record against ATP #1s.

The rarity of facing multiple #1s in the same season–let alone beating them–stops us from drawing any meaningful conclusions about what Svitolina’s feat indicates for her future. At the very least, however, it reminds us of the Ukrainian’s potential as a future star, and puts her among some very good historical company.

This info would be perfect for a trollish GM thread :oh:

E. has a group of zealous haters over there, I wonder how'd they react to this piece of trivia
The first post somebody would be saying #WeakEra
