Re: Belinda Benčič News/Articles/Interviews
In addition to playing doubles, Hingis is also advising Belinda Bencic, the teenage Swiss, though her own tennis is the priority. "In doubles everything can turn around so quickly. It can go against you, but also in your favor, so you have to take it very seriously. You have to do what's best for you and focus on it. But I have been helping Belinda Bencic whenever I can. I warm her up, I practise with her, I go to see the matches. I give her as much time as I can. She trusts me completely. We have known each for 10 years and she believes in me. She has come very far and I'm very happy for her," said Hingis.
Inevitably, comparisons are made between Hingis and Bencic, who has been mentored by Hingis' mother, Melanie Monitor. But, as Hingis said, those comparisons aren't fair. "It's difficult to compare Belinda and me. It's a different generation and I was very young when I had my success. She has her own path, and she has to do everything herself. No one can do it for her. You can only be there for her and help her, but she's the one who is on the court hitting the ball.
"It's very difficult for young players, as there are even younger players coming up who want to beat you, and also those who are a year or two older who are still hungry. But if you're hungry and willing to fight for your spot there's always going to be room for improvement."
