Zvonareva wins first career title

May 4, 2003
BOL, Croatia (AP) -- Third-seeded Vera Zvonareva won her first career title Sunday, defeating Conchita Martinez Granados 6-1, 6-3 at the Croatian Bol Ladies Open.

The 18-year-old Russian, who is ranked 28th, dominated the match throughout, holding her opponent at bay with precise baseline shots and solid serves.

``I didn't expect anything at the beginning of the tournament and kept telling myself I should just try and play my best tennis and show what I can do,'' Zvonareva said.

Martinez, an 88th-ranked Spaniard in her first final, sought medical attention for a sore shoulder at the end of the first set.
Zvonareva wins first career title at Bol tennis

BOL, Croatia (Ticker) - Vera Zvonareva earned her maiden victory Sunday with a 6-1, 6-3 rout of Conchita Martinez Granados in the final of the Croatian Bol Ladies Open claycourt tennis event.

The 18-year-old Russian triumphed in her second career championship match, earning $27,000. She lost her first final in Palermo last year in three hours to Mariana Diaz-Oliva.

"It feels unbelievably great to win your first WTA Tour title." Zvonareva said. "I am so happy right now, but I'll only have one day to celebrate as I have to be on court on Tuesday (in Berlin)."

Zvonareva was a lot fresher Sunday, dispatching Martinez Granados in 67 minutes. The third seed won her third consecutive match in straight sets and dropped just one set this week.

"I didn't have any expectations coming here," she said. "Everytime I step on the court, I try to play my best tennis and show the people what I can do.

Zvonareva had a breakout year in 2002 when she went from No. 371 to No. 45. She has stepped up to the next level this year, reaching quarterfinals at her first two events in Auckland and Hobart and two more at Tier I events at Indian Wells and Charleston. This win will help her reach her goal of joining the top 20.

"As I said earlier this week, my goal now is the top 20 before aiming for the top 10," Zvonareva said.

It was the first WTA Tour championship match for Martinez Granados. The 27-year-old Spaniard had won 10 career ITF crowns but has not been able to translate that success to the top circuit.

"I am very proud about my week and I'll reach my career highest ranking," she said. "I gained a lot of confidence, I've been playing very well here, although today was not a good day for me. I was very nervous playing my first final and also quite tired. I couldn't run well. Vera played a great match, she'll be a top 10 player."
