iPhone jailbreaking (and all cell phone unlocking) made legal

Owners of iPhones and other smartphones are one step closer towards taking complete control of their gadgets, thanks to a new government ruling Monday on the practice of "jailbreaking."

This weekend has seen a flurry of activity about digital rights, but the biggest news dropped Monday morning, when the FCC announced that it had made the controversial practice of “jailbreaking” your iPhone — or any other cell phone — legal.

Jailbreaking — the practice of unlocking a phone (and particularly an iPhone) so it can be used on another network and/or run other applications than those approved by Apple — has technically been illegal for years. Most jailbroken phones are used on the U.S. T-Mobile network or on overseas carriers, or are used to run applications that Apple refuses to sell, such as Safari ad-blocking apps, alternate keyboard layouts, or programs that change the interface to the iPhone's SMS system and the way its icons are laid out.

While technically illegal, no one has been sued or prosecuted for the practice. (Apple does seriously frown on the practice, and jailbreaking your phone will still void your warranty.) It’s estimated that more than a million iPhone owners have jailbroken their handsets.

Apple fought hard against the legalization, arguing that jailbreaking was a form of copyright violation. The FCC disagreed, saying that jailbreaking merely enhanced the inter-operability of the phone, and was thus legitimate under fair-use rules.

The upshot is that now anyone can jailbreak or otherwise unlock any cell phone without fear of legal penalties, whether you want to install unsupported applications or switch to another cellular carrier. Cell phone companies are of course still free to make it difficult for you to do this — and your warranty will probably still be voided if you do — but at least you won’t be fined or imprisoned if you jailbreak a handset.

I just watched the Vika/Lisicki highlights and it really got me thinking why Masha doesn't return Vika's serves as well as Bine? I mean Bine isn't exactly the greatest of movers, is it just because she hits a flatter ball or Vika was serving really poorly? I know Masha can beat Vika in any given match but I hope she improves that stat this year (if they do meet)

I share your feelings :sobbing: I really have to start studying hard. Exams are getting closer and closer :hysteric: But, apart from that, I'm fine! :)

Are you me? :hysteric:

I have 4 : society law, commercial contracts law, history of the economy in europe during the two worldwide wars, and finally the organization of society or something (forgot the exact subject).

1 hour each.

:hysteric: I need to study oh god.

Happy new year btw! had any fun?

:hysteric:

I did that very same exam about history of the economy last year and I quite liked it honestly. That's probably one of the very few exams I've ever liked :sobbing:

Happy new year! :cheer: I went on a trip to Switzerland to celebrate. Enjoyable weekend! ;)

I would've probably committed suicide, if I had to study biology, chemistry and all that stuff :sobbing: Maths is already driving me insane!

Maths killed me in high school, I can't imagine how I would do in university :rolls:
I wish I could go back and change a lot of things

enough with regrets, reply of the year :spit: :

Serena about Masha

SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, I think she was playing last year too and she pulled out and it worked for her, so maybe she thought it was another good strategy for her. I just found out, so...One thing I can say about Maria is she's a great competitor. I've never not seen her play for any reason. I hope she's okay going into Australia. She's great for the tennis.I think she probably made a wise decision for her just to get herself ready for Melbourne.

I'm getting sick of all these "re-boots" of old franchises (movies in particular, havent played games in a while) that try to add more drama and realism and darkness than the originals. Part of what made Tomb Raider memorable was the ridiculous unrealism of it....Lara's huge knockers, jumping from obscene heights and not getting hurt, bad guys that were comically dumb, etc
