"We're not as bad in doubles as everyone thinks," Scrivano said. "There's some obstacles that we're dealing with that make it very difficult to compete in singles and doubles. We're a team that's a work in progress, as I've said many times. The reality is that we have a lot of new players to our system who didn't play in the preseason, so the bottom line is that we aren't going to be playing our best tennis in February. To all the people who don't know better, we're going to be much better in the second half of the season and in the post season when it really matters. We're getting there."

To kick off singles play, BU placed another point on the board with No. 13 Burgic's straight-set win over Guillermo, 6-2, 6-2. Burgic is now 7-2 in the top spot for the Lady Bears.

"Ema's becoming a very mature player," Scrivano said. "She's developing nicely. We like the way she's handling herself on the court, and her mindset has improved so much since last year. We need her to continue to do this and take it to another level."

Take it to ANOTHER level?

Never heard of her. Being no. 4 is not to be sniffed at, but you should beware that very few good players play the TE16 circuit, they go straight from the 14s to ITFs, so ranks are misleading. (The high tariff events Euro 16 champs and the summer and winter cups do get good turnouts, but they're not enough to unskew the rankings.)

“The one thing that is pretty obvious is that we do have a prideful and tough bunch of ladies because the circumstances playing here at Baylor are never easy and today was particularly difficult,” Joffe said. “It was a dogfight, and our girls hung in there, and one by one by one, we started to turn the thing around.

“It is a rivalry I would say, and Baylor absolutely gave us a darn good shot. I consider it to be a really quality win. The rankings won’t say that, but I definitely do.”

BU beats UT

"The Lady Bears have now won seven matches in a row and raise their record to 14-13 with the win. In Big 12 play, BU is 7-1, while Texas falls to 13-10 and 6-2 in league action. BU has now won 14 of the last 15 matches against Texas.

"I love the way we competed in doubles today," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "On all three courts we had the right mindset, and it definitely got us off on the right foot. It got the momentum going for us. Texas is tough, they battled back and it was just a tremendous match from start to finish. We were very fortunate to come out on top today."

Baylor now trails the all-time series against UT, 34-15.

"It was a real team effort," Scrivano said. "I feel like this was the first time all year that all our players showed up and competed hard and had the right mindset. It was good to see that their mental toughness is developing."

Up next, Baylor will face 15th-ranked Texas Tech (18-4, 8-0) in a Big 12 showdown at 2 p.m. at the McLeod Family Tennis Center in Lubbock, Texas. With a win over TTU, Baylor would clinch a share of the Big 12 title and earn the No. 1 seed at next week's Big 12 Championship in Norman, Okla."

I have said this several times on here and people have disagreed, but Patty is one of the most arrogant and unpleasant people I have ever known. Her former players have said that she is extremely verbally abusive. Obviously nothing that is going to get her fired but enough to make good players transfer out. Some coaches improve with age and some are not able to adjust to the times and new attitudes of 18-year-olds. Considering it's resources, there is no reason why Texas should not be in the top 10 more often than not. There is definitely something wrong when in-state rivals Baylor, Texas A&M, TCU, and even Texas Tech have better teams than Texas.

Tech article

"April 18, 2013

FORT WORTH, Texas – When No. 15 Texas Tech (17-4, 7-0) hits the tennis courts on Friday against No. 25 TCU, it is the first step in the last leg of completing history for the Lady Raiders.
The Lady Raiders are looking to become the first school to run the table undefeated since Baylor in 2010, but more importantly, Texas Tech is looking to become the first school other than Texas or Baylor to win back to back Big 12 regular season titles in women’s tennis.

But for either of those things to happen, the Lady Raiders will have to get by No. 25 TCU (17-3, 6-1 Big 12) and No. 28 Baylor (13-13, 6-1 Big 12). TCU is 9-1 at home this season, while Baylor handed Texas Tech one of its four losses this season in January.
The Lady Raiders are riding an eight-match winning streak, which is the fourth longest in program history. A win over TCU would be the longest winning streak since winning 10 straight in 1987.

The Lady Raiders are led by No. 93 Samantha Adams, who is 15-17 on the season, but 6-4 in her last 10 matches. Kenna Kilgo (19-10) and Rashmi Teltumbde (13-10) anchor the No. 2 and No. 3 positions for Texas Tech.

The Lady Raiders feature the best 4-5-6 lineup in the Big 12 with Elizabeth Ullathorne (23-8), Nikki Sanders (21-5) and Caroline Starck (20-5).
But the marquee feature of the No. 15 Lady Raiders is their doubles play. Texas Tech has won 20 of 21 doubles points this season and 39 of 46 over the past two seasons. Anchoring doubles is the No. 15 tandem of Adams and Kilgo (20-7), who hold the top spot. No. 2 doubles is solidified by the duo of Teltumbde and Sanders (20-8), while Starck and Ullathorne (17-6) are locked in at No. 3.
TCU is led by No. 45 Stephanie Tan and No. 100 Olivia Smith. Millie Nichols has teamed with Smith to form the No. 54 doubles squad nationally.

The doubles point will be key when the Lady Raiders face Baylor, as Kilgo and Adams will square off against No. 17 Ema Burgic and Victoria Kisialeva. The Texas Tech duo cruised to an 8-3 win in January. Baylor won the top four singles matches, including three-set victories over Kilgo and Ullathorne.

At the Baylor match on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the McLeod Tennis Center, Texas Tech will look to set a new single-match attendance record for the Lady Raiders. Admission is free and there will be free pizza, a drawing for a tennis package, t-shirt giveaway, and a free kids clinic immediately following the match."

Pizza restaurants and tennis teams are in a symbiotic relationship

Texas wins 4-0 against OK State to take the conference championships.

Pretty good for the Horns considering Gajic is on crutches and Padegimaite is also playing semi injured

Tbh, Texas didn't lose that much when Alex Martin transferred. She lost her one dual match last year 0 and 0. She hasn't done much at South Carolina either-she lost against a player who was barely ranked top 30 in Texas as a junior

"Ema Burgic: Mature Beyond Her Years

Sophomore Carrying Burden On, Off the Court

April 26, 2013

By Jerry Hill
Baylor Bear Insider

Battling through a stress reaction and other ailments that limited her last season, Ema Burgic still managed to earn All-American honors in doubles and post a 16-4 dual-match record in singles.

But she knew that wasn't enough.

While her tennis game has obviously improved dramatically, the real turning point for Burgic came two months ago in a match at South Bend, Ind.

"I won the first set 6-0 and then lost the match," Burgic said of a 0-6, 6-1, 6-2 loss to Notre Dame's Britney Sanders, "because I went back to my old way of playing. When coach would tell me something, I wouldn't believe him and I would go my own way. And then I lost it, and I saw that he gave up on me at that point. It felt so bad when I saw that he didn't care anymore. He knew I was going to lose. And after that match, I told him, `From now on, whatever you say.' And since then, I don't think I've lost a match."

Ranked 10th nationally in singles and eighth in doubles with freshman Victoria Kisialeva, Burgic actually lost two of the next three matches. But the sophomore from Bosnia is one of the hottest players in the country, winning 14 in a row going into the Big 12 Championships that start Thursday with women's first-round matches at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman, Okla.

"I felt like I had finally hit rock bottom with her and I couldn't get through to her anymore," said Baylor head coach Joey Scrivano, whose team won eight in a row to win a share of the Big 12 regular-season championship. "It was painful for her and painful for me when you get to that stage where you have no more options here but to move on."

Burgic is a phenomenal 39-8 in singles this season, including a 22-5 dual-match record, and is 22-3 in the doubles pairing with Kisialeva. But Scrivano insists that her best work has been done off the court in holding this fragile team together.

With a pair of transfers and three freshmen, the only experienced players coming into this season were Burgic, fellow sophomore Megan Horter and junior Jordaan Sanford, who had transferred the year before from Maryland.

"Honestly, I was a little bit scared," said Burgic, who knew she had to take on the added leadership role. "No one has been through the Baylor tradition, and no one knows what Baylor is all about, because it's not like any other college. There is a legacy behind it. And it's hard for me, because I had only been here for one year and I didn't really have anyone to lead me. I knew it was going to mostly be on me and Megan, because Jordaan is not the type to really speak up. She shows it on the court. But it was up to me and Megan to try to get everyone on the same page."

And when first-semester freshmen Maria Biryukova and Kiah Generette were added to the team in January, "they didn't know what was going on, and you can't just to talk to them all the time, because they're going to think we're nuts."

"Ema has done a lot of things behind the scenes to pull this team together," Scrivano said. "The facts are, on any team everything is pulling you apart. Every single thing is trying to pull your team apart. So the more people you have like Ema, who are pulling it together and trying to unify the group, it only helps."

What Burgic saw all along, though, was that this team had talent. Not that you could really tell when the Lady Bears got off to a 7-13 start and lost a Big 12 match at home to league newcomer TCU.

"There were points where it was really hard, and I just wanted to say, `I've had enough. I can't do it anymore,''' Burgic said. "I had to focus on the court and do all this other stuff. I just wanted to give up. And coach would be like, `No, now is the time when you need to show the leadership and you need to be tough.' And that's what I did. I never gave up.

"I always believed. Everyone is talented, and everyone knows how to play tennis. It was just a matter of the time when everything would come together, like all the pieces of the puzzle."

On an individual basis, that's what her freshman year was like. Bothered by the stress reaction, along with back and hip problems, "I was just on the court and basically standing and playing; and we were trying to find a way just to win."

After seeing a specialist in Dallas last summer, Burgic was equipped with an orthotic for her foot, and "I could tell immediately."

"It felt amazing. It was kind of weird at the beginning, that I could actually do everything on the court," she said. "I was surprised that I was able to actually run down the ball."

Another turning point for Burgic came in a three-set loss to Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar in the ITA Southwest Regional final.

"I lost that match because I wasn't emotionally stable at that point," she said. "But I learned a huge lesson from there."

That maturity and emotional stability also helped her deal with one of the toughest points in the year, when Horter suffered an off-court injury that would keep her out the rest of the season.

"Even now when I see her, it's so hard, because you have never seen a person that works harder than her, that wants it more than her. She wants it for the team," Burgic said. "And I remember telling the other girls, `OK, from now on, no excuses. If you're hurt, if you have small pain, anything, no one can complain about anything. . . . So whenever you want to complain about anything, just think about Megan."

Of the nine regular-season championships he's won, Scrivano said this was the toughest, "just because of the quality of competition and all the adversity we had within our own team."

The 19th-ranked Lady Bears are the somewhat surprising top seed for a tournament that includes second-seeded and 17th-ranked Texas Tech, third-seeded, third-seeded and 25th-ranked Texas and fourth-seeded and No. 27 TCU.

"I think the biggest thing for this team breaking through here this last six weeks is they trusted what we were doing on a daily basis," Scrivano said. "And that's going to be the biggest question this weekend, because we've been two teams. The first half of the season, we were a team that was trying to do it on their own, trying to do it their own way, not trusting the formula. And then the latter part of the second half, they finally bought in. So, it's going to be really interesting which team is going to show up this weekend. And I don't know." "

Now, back to retirement

Can someone please tell me why Makenzie Craft isn't playing for Baylor? A former blue chip player and texas native. She had a winning record at Ga including a 64 60 win against Baylor's own #2/3 Victoria K, and a win against then Florids's ( now VA's) Danelle Collins. She is a great doubles player and everyone knows Baylor needs good doubles play. Am I missing something? Surely she can play atleast #6. I think Joey just doesn't know how to coach players like Craft. Good aggressive ball strikers. So if you struggle, you're done.

She hasn't played well at all . I go to baylor. I agree she should be top 6 but she's been shaky since the beginning of the season when put it in the lineup. But I agree she should Atleast be 6th.

Clay who hasn't played well since she arrived at Baylor and post shoulder surgery, or Meagan who hasn't won a match since she was inserted in the line-up, and by the way had a losing record at #6 2 years ago before she was moved up to # 2 last year still with a losing record before her accident. I just think he needs to give Craft a chance. I have seen her play. she isn't bad. Definitely a better choice at 6 that the players who played #6 the last few matches. Maybe they would have won the match against Vanderbilt or TAMU or both had Craft played that spot instead of Meagan played her first matches of the season against those teams. I like the other girls, but Craft I think is better at #6.
