First of all, I have to say that sometimes open games are really needed, because people feel a bit free to send those little gems they can't fit into categories.

I hope nobody is offended if their song is not very well reviewed, you'll just have to start to get used to it.

SF1

Acid Pauli - What a nice surprise to start with. I didn't know this song at all, and the percussion with those background vocals sounded as if you were in the middle of the Andes riff with the incas themselves. That's what I love in music, pieces that lift me up and take me to other places. This song did excatly that. Congratulations to whoever sent it.

Mononoke - Nice voice, smooth melody, it sounds good as a soundtrack for a movie where a girl leaves home and takes the morning train to start a new life. I missed a change at the middle of the song, something new that never came. In any case, decent.

Os Mutantes - Well, what can I say about Os Mutantes? Rita Lee is a reference since my mother played her vinyls in the mid 80s, when she was not part of Os Mutantes anymore. For those who don't know them, they're one of the most experimental groups ever, the biggest in Brazil for sure. Baby is probably their most comercial song, but it's so subtle, it's like Rita is really telling me that she loves me. This one will get good points from me.

Midnight Oil - I always liked this song. It's not like he's got a good voice or the music is outstanding, but it's catchy and it's message is clear. As clear as the singer was an Australian activist who became a minister for his country and, as I read, a very outstanding one. Hope they at least make the final.

Tracy Chapman - Well that's a risky pick, an acapella song. With no background vocals. Nothing. Her voice occupies everything. Even the blanks amongst the song. A big shout out against genre violence and against the system. And this girl shouts it out loud beautifully.

George Ezra - To be honest I must be one of the few here that doesn't find George Ezra that special. Ok, Budapest was a nice song, but that's it. I see this one sort of the same, with the agravant of the Ououououououououououououos being endless and getting in my ears like a driller.

Snow Patrol - Mmmm, another very standard song for my taste. A standard riff at the beginning, with a standard voice leads into a standard chorus for a couple and a half minutes to then burst into... a standard melody with the standard riff over a standard voice that sings the standard chorus. Too standard for me. :p

Cage the Elephant - Loved the beginning with that deep bass at the backgroud and the voice is quite particular. Then it tries to go somewhere in the chorus, but it dacays a bit for me then. In any case, a good discovery, let's see if it grows a bit until Wednesday.

Santigold - Interesting. I like the music, I like the double beat that prevails in the whole song, not so much her voice. But all in all it's a nice song that may well get some points from me.

tUnE-yArDs - Hey, give me something new I hadn't heard before, with an unsteady beat, recognizable voice, good background vocals and some fresh air!!! I love songs that make me think there is another way to concieve music and to experience music, that is not following the standards (check Sbnow Patrol  ). Nice discovery!!!

Lauryn Hill - Damn, I love this girl. Well, I love her 'Misseducation' album, though this song is not the one I like best from that album, but still is great. And I love rap. This is the way I see melodic rap, very smooth, very catchy and, as I'm listening to the song I just can't stop moving my feet. And her voice is really fabulous. :hearts:

Reba McIntire - Sorry to who sent this one, but I found this song quite boring. Maybe it's because I don't like modern country (gimme some bluegrass instead) or because the intro for the song was too large. But even though I finally didn't skip the song, I was tempted several times.

Mariah Carey - As I said previously, this is one of the few Mariah Carey songs that doesn't make me puke. It's catchy, has a nice beat and her voice is well fitted into the song. But looking at the quality of the contest, I don't know if it will get points, you can check it out in a week or two. ;)

Rod Stewart - It's a shame that with the quantity and quality of songs Rod Stewart has, this one was the chosen one. Very poor version, too bland, uneffecive and boring. His voice outstands, but that's about it.

Foster The People - The first beats of the song reminded me of Terence Trent Darby's Wishing Well, then the song had nothing to do with it, obviously. Catchy song, catchy beat, would say it's above average, so that's good.

Kelner - The start of the song would say that the song would lead to a discotheque beat, but it then turns to a simple but effective song that remains listenable during the 4 minutes of the track. This one's what I'd call a stadium song, I can imagine everyone shouting 'I believe in June' while a mobile camera flies above the audience.

Vaya con Dios - Very distinctive Belgian group from the 80s that sounded different than the 80s. This is not my favourite song from their repertoire, but still a good one. She has a very particular voice and goes perfectly with the music.

Tom McRae - Maybe it's because I'm tired of writing, maybe it's because I'm overall tired, but I just wanted the song to finish so I could finish my reviews for SF1. Not a good way to finish it up, anyway. Average song, it still has a wek to grow on me.

SF2 reviews wont come until new week. ;)

Re: The TF Pick The Best Song Game – Game 25 - Songs Revealed - Vote - Posts 59/60

I'm starting listening now. Starting at the back. :p
Steely Dan - Your Gold Teeth is the first song I didn't know that caught my attention. I like it, thanks for nominating :hearts:. When I saw the title, I thought it was a rap track, as there's an English rapper with a similar name, but no, that's not Flow Dan. :haha: It is also the first song I haven't heard before from this list, since I listened to Blood Orange at the end of last year. I dislike Blood Orange, but this song is nice enough and my favourite from him, it got into my personal top 100 songs of 2013. :oh:

The next song China Crisis - Wishful Thinking . I can see the appeal of this song, but I'm not in the mood for this right now and I never listened to such 80s music, though it could get some low points from me. It is definitely better than Kate Winslet, I detest that song. Same applies for Elton John.

MS MR was one of the discoveries of 2012. Their songs are quite good, but there is nothing really exciting about them. This one is very uplifting and I need such songs at the moment, so thumbs up :yeah:. The Walkmen - The Rat was not bad either, the singer's voice reminds me of some other singer, I think from the group Cold War Kids. It is not my style though, so unlikely it will get points. I am done with such songs after the first listen usually. The Tokens - The Lion Sleeps Tonight - what an annoying song

Sing It Back on the other hand is one of my least favourite songs from Moloko, but still nice. In case you want to hear the original version (the one submitted is actually Boris Dlugoš remix/rework), it is much darker and cooler (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9_OfgmGlDs); I considered submitting it in Game 18 where I went with "The I.D" instead.

I wanted to finish the review of the second SF, but got bored underway, so I'll stop here. There are some good songs here and there I guess, so all is good.

SF 2 for me mostly sucked, so I'm not going to do reviews on it :oh:. Those who nominated good ones (for me) will in time discover . As usual probably lots I vote for will be out in the semis, so it will be revealed pretty soon .

I don't like the idea of these reviews. Not before the voting anyway. They could potentially influence other people's votes. but that's just my opinion.

I don't think this has proven to be true. Songs with horrible reviews have made finals, and vice versa. People know their own minds enough I'd like to think .

I can't even predict if my pick sucks or not. So many random entries

I must wonder though how many users - if anyone actually - watched the Raise Ravens movie?

Re: The TF Pick The Best Song Game – Game 25 - Songs Revealed - Vote - Posts 59/60

I think people unsure of what they like or not in some musical departments may be unconsciously influenced by the reviews they read before the votes, even if it's a matter of a few points, it can play a little part in the decisive picks.

If I read a bad review of a song and I'm afraid it can influence people's judgement negatively, I'll submit my opinion to make a balance, if I happen to like the song in question.

I think we're all influenced, one way or another, as strongly individual as we may be.

SF#1 Reviews...

Acid Pauli - (La Voz) Tan Tierna - What a star tof the competition. This is so different that it makes it almost impossible to review after only one listen… Overall I definitely have a positive feeling about this song, but I will really need to listen to this some more to be able to give this song a ranking. But anyways, thanks for entering it.

Mononoke - Alice - I like the tone of the song, I like the voice of the singer, again a very good first impression. I could definitely see this song grow on me during the next few days.

Os Mutantes - Baby - It seems this will be a very hard SF to rate. Again a good first impression but that left me with the need to listen again to the song to get more into it.

Midnight Oil - Beds Are Burning - Back to something more famous and that I've listened to several times before. I like the choruses of the song, but always feel it lacks a bit of punch for such a song. But it remains a song I really like.

Tracy Chapman - Behind The Wall - What a risky choice. I really love Tracy Chapman and I'm all for a capella parts in a song, but as much as I liked this, I kinda felt like this could not be just it. Tracy's voice is so amazing though.

George Ezra - Cassy "O" - Ezra was definitely one of my nicest discoveries in the game when James entered him with Budapest. I remember checking this song out at the time too. I find it a bit less good, but I really still enjoy the upbeat rythm and George's voice. An enjoyable entry.

Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars - Another song I (and everyone of us) have already heard about 12 thousand times. There's been a time when it's really been overplayed, but now that the song has aged a little, I must say I was happy to hear it again.I like the slow rythm of the singer vs the quicker background and the general atmosphere of the song.

Cage The Elephant - Come A Little Closer - There was really something I liked in this song. I don't exactly know what yet, but does it really matter ?

Santigold - Disparate Youth - I knew that song but had no idea who sang. I'm actually not so sure where I do know the song frome. It's a song I really like so I'm happy to finally know who's behind it.

tUnE-yArDs - Doorstep - Another of these songs giving me a very good first impression (and a really good one at that…) but that I'd like to listen ot again before voting. But I really feel something so great about this song. I atually can't wait to listen to it some more, which should normally be a good sign.

Lauryn Hill - Doo-*** (That Thing) - I strongly hate rap. And Yet I warmly love Lauryn Hill whose miseductation album is such a gem :inlove: :inlove: I definitely can't get enough of it.

Reba McEntyre - Fancy - I know we've had her on the duet contest but other than that I never heard about her. Apparently she's quite famous overseas. I couldn't say I really got into the song, it was decent, but most probably won't be enough to make the cut for me.

Mariah Carey - Fantasy - There was a time Mariah Carey made songs I like. This was definitely one of that era, despite not being my favorite one, it remains a song I enjoy listening to.

Rod Stewart - Forever Young - It seemed like a nice song, but I really didn't get into it at any point and therefore don't have much more to say about it as of now.

Foster The People - Houdini - The music in the background kinda bothered me in that song, it just felt wrong at most times for me, while there was definitely some potential in the song.

Kelner - I Believe In June - This SF doesn't end as well as it started it seems, or maybe I'm just too tired to enjoy these last songs, but another instance of me not going into the song.

Vaya Con Dios - Just A Friend Of Mine - I really love that voice and the general rythm and atmosphere of the song just suit the singer's voice perfectly.

Tom McRae - Karaoke Soul - I don't who he is, but he kinda sound like he's 13 or something. (he's not, he was actually 33 when that song was released…) It kinda put me off at first, then I got into it, but then when the song became more itnense it became a problem again to me… All those considerations aside, the song remained interesting so I'll have to listen to it further to see if it can get into my top 10 for this SF or not.

Re: The TF Pick The Best Song Game – Game 25 - Songs Revealed - Vote - Posts 59/60

And here goes the SF#2 reviews...

Patrick Park - Life Is A Song - Apart from the title (which really sucks  ), the song was nice enough, a pleasant start for that second SF.

The Raveonettes - Love In A Trashcan - With the name of the band I somehow thought we'd have a preview of the girls band edition to come. My bad. I liked the song but wasn't completly won over by it yet. We'll see how this turns out in the days to come.

Paramore - Misery Business - I tend to like girls rock bands. Maybe it will need more time to sink in, but I can't say I really got into it after the first listen, though I kinda got in a little in the song towards the end of it.

Lilly Allen - Not Fair - I love Lilly Allen. This is also one of my favorite songs from her. She's definitely not a great singer (as in having a great voice or good singing technique) but I love her second degree and she's a real pleasure to see live. Points coming up your way, Lilly :wavey:

The Orion Experience - Obsessed With You - A bit of a strange song, but I definitely mean this in a good way. I like the chorus a bit less than the rest of the song, but it definitely makes me wanna hear more. Thanks for entering this :yeah:

Jeanette - Porque Te Vas - I Simply love this song. It's at the same time so simple and so efficient. I almost entered it several time myself. It seems I waited too long :p I didn't know she was such a mix : Jeanette, is a half Belgian-Congolese, half-Spanish (Canarian), English-born, American-raised singer who has resided in Spain since the age of 12  didn't know about the belgian heritage either.

Rafaella Carra - Que Dolor! - Apparently we're in the Spanish section of the game. That's definitely a good news for me. I didn't know this one, but definitely a nice discovery, such a fun song. :)

Jorge Ben & Gal Costa - Que Pena (Live) - And here ends our spanish section, only it's portuguese and not spanish apparently  While ther's an undeniable nice vibe to the song, I can't say I was really taken by the song.

B J Thomas - Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head - And all of a sudden my head tilts from right to left, and a smile appears on my face. This is such a happy song :) I'm actually not sure I had ever heard the original version, the song having been covered so many times

Moloko - Sing It Back - Another Moloko entry, and my personnal favorite. This is such a good song, I love just about everything in this song. Again, thanks for entering this. :yeah: I'm gonna have a hard time giving the top points in this SF

The Tokens - The Lion Sleeps Tonight - To whoever entered this : thanks for ruining my day :yeah: I'm gonna be stuck with this song in my head for a few hours at least  On the other hand, that's how efficient this songs is. I don't think I had ever heard this specific version, but it's not like the song changes much from one version to the other (even the french versions seems to be identical). Might still grab a couple of points depending on the rest of the SF...

The Walkmen - The Rat - Another of these "will need further listen" songs. Didn't really impress me postively nor negatively.

MS MR - Think Of You - At first when I saw the title it made me think of the Whigfield song. I think I'd have prefered it. It wasn't bad, but I never got into it either.

Elton John - Tiny Dancer - I'll never be a huge Elton John fan. There are a few songs I can listen to, but overall I simply don't like anything he does, sounds all the same to me

Kate Winslet - What If - ***GUILTY PLEASURE ALERT*** As those of you who followed the best actress contest already know, Kate definitely is my favorite modern actress. I must say the first time I heard she was singing I was quite surprised to hear that she could actually sing and had a really nice voice. In addition to all that, the song has an important place in my personnal history. So yes, obviously the song is pure cheese, but I do love it very dearly :p

China Crisis - Whishful Thinking - Sounds like just another 80's band. I can't say the song really dragged me into it. But this is usually the kind of songs that requires a couple of listens. Though I'm not convinced it will be enough for this one

Steely Dan - Your Gold Teeth - This just didn't speak to me at all   It just sounded like the same thing all over again for a never-ending song.

Blood Orange - You're Not Good Enough - This SF really didn't end as good as it could've. I'm quite disappointed in the last few songs. In all fairness, it might be my attention-span reaching its limit  (but I don't think that's the problem :p) In any case I'll listen some more to these before voting just to make sure that I didn't miss anything I would regret later on.

This duet chose part of their name in tribute to the girl group sound they love (especially The Ronettes). Ronnie Spector was a special guest on one of their albums.

I love Raindrops keep falling... so much :inlove: Timeless classic which I was really, really close to submit to movies game :p (From Butch Casidy and Sundance the kid)
Burt Bacharach. :worship:

It's not the original version chosen in this game, though. Here's the single released in october 1969:

It appeared ten days later in the movie with a previous recording session:

Bacharach wrote it especially for the movie and was inspired by some footages he was watching during its making (especially for the scene with Paul Newman and Katherine Ross riding bicycle). He started to enjoy a lot creating songs for movies then (with the collaboration of lyricist Hal David).

I prefer the movie version, more rough, but more charming as well. Funny how I often find supposed "recording improvements" useless and most of the time altering some kind of magic.

Can't say anything about the singer BJ Thomas, since I only heard of him through this song, which was a big hit.

Reviews

Semi-Final 1

(La Voz) Tan Tierna - This is fresh, has a nice sound. I had never heard this before, but I rather like it. The blending of elements of what is thought of as a traditional south american sound in the percussion along with the more synthetic sounds and the backing vocal makes for a really nice fresh sound. I enjoyed this a lot. Kudos to whoever nominated it.

Alice - Looooooove the voice. Very nice song, I'd listen to it again. I truly enjoyed this. Yet again, kudos to whoever nominated it.

Baby - Super chill, really nice. Quite relaxing. I'd love to relax with a good book and listen to this.

Beds are Burning - Just not my thing. Not a fan of the voice, I don't find it particularly catchy either.

Behind the Wall - Acapella is risky. I applaud whoever nominated this for taking such a risk. I've never been a huge fan of Tracy, but this is so nice. Her voice is quite lovely.

Cassy O - Definitely not as good as Budapest, but it's pretty catchy and is pretty nice. I'm not blown away, but it's above average.

Chasing Cars - This song was done to death back in the day. It's funny how my musical taste has evolved since then. I HATED this song when it first came out. Hated it. Now, I don't mind it so much. I won't say it's one of my favorite songs that I would go out of my way to listen to, but it is nice.

Come a Little Closer - I have never really gotten into Cage the Elephant. Just never been my thing, I HATE Ain't No Rest for the Wicked. Can't stand it. This one though… I like. This song masks what I hate about Matt Schultz's voice and it's actually pretty nice. Thumbs up.

Disparate Youth - Gosh I love her. The industrial-electro sound is so nice. I remember the work she did with Christina Aguilera back on Bionic, which was some of my favorite material Christina has ever put out. Disparate Youth is Santigold at her best, if slightly more minimalistic than some of her other material (in a positive way.) So darn good.

Doorstep - This is fresh. I've never heard this before and I'm not sure I've heard anything like it before. The vocals are fresh, the music is fresh, the beat is fresh. Just really nice. A breath of fresh air, truly. Kudos to the nominator.

Doo-*** (That Thing) - Personally, I think Lauryn is one of the most talented musicians mainstream music has ever seen. It's a shame her personal life is such a mess. While this isn't one of my favorite of Lauryn's, it's still so good.

Fancy - Not bad, not good. Just meh. It's alright I guess. Immediately starting singing that other fancy song in my head when I read the title though...

Fantasy - Probably one of my favorite Mariah songs. It's catchy, whimsical, and fun.

Forever Young - Yet another one that I started singing a different version of in my head by the title... I know everyone loves this song, but it just doesn't do it for me. It's alright, but I would never go out of my way to listen to it .

Houdini - Catchy. Upbeat. Nice song, I liked it.

I Believe in June - Beginning of the song had a bit of an 80s feel. Didn't quite get that same feeling in the chorus. This was nice enough. I'm not blown away, but it's good.

Just a Friend of Mine - This is good. She's got a very distinctive voice that I enjoy. Quite nice

Karaoke Soul - It's okay. Not wowed by it. Wouldn't really listen to it of my own accord.

Semi-Final 2

Life is a Song - This sounds like it would have been featured on One Tree Hill :haha: it's decent, not great, but decent.

Life in a Trashcan - Not horrible, but it's just not for me.

Misery Business - While Hayley is a a good vocalist, I've never been a huge fan of their music. I do like this and a few other choice singles of theirs though.

Not Fair - I shouldn't love this. I really shouldn't. But I do. Lily is so hilarious. She's at her best when she's having fun when she's brutally honest.

Obsessed With You - It took several listens for me to really get into this, but it's kind of fun actually.

Porque Te vas - I like the whispered quality of the vocal, it's nice. Not my favorite song by any means, but certainly better than average.

Que Dolor - This is annoyingly catchy! Kinda fun, but just average for me.

Que Pena - Relaxing, but nothing special for me. Average.

Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head - An old favorite. Quite nice, takes you back to a simpler time. Pure voice, pure music. Love it.

Sing it Back - Another one that took a few listens to get into, but it actually is nice. Somewhat mainstream, but it is actually surprisingly good.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight - Sentimentally, I love this. Musically, I don't. Don't get me wrong, it isn't bad by any means. I just would never listen to this if I hadn't grown up hearing it.

The Rat - Decent, but average. Just not something I would listen to all that often.

Think of You - I LOVE THIS. Right up my alley. So nice. Love her voice. They also did a really nice remix of Charli xcx's You about a year ago that I quite liked.

Tiny Dancer - Never been into Elton John, but this is as good as it gets for him as far as I'm concerned. I do like this song.

What If - SHE SINGS?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!??!??!? She actually has a nice voice… but this song is a bad 90's Celine castoff.

Wishful Thinking - Something about this reminds me A LOT of Gwen Stefani's Cool (which was definitely reminiscent of early 80s music anyways,) in a good way. I rather like this. It's quite nice…. And we all know I'm a sucker for 80s synth.

Your Gold Teeth - I just don't get Steely Dan… to me, their musi is elevator music. It's just not special to me. I know many people love this music, but it's just not for me.

You're Not Good Enough - Like others have stated, most of Blood Orange's music just doesn't do it for me. But this one? Love it. I love the blending of the two vocals. It's fresh to me, I really enjoy it.
