A Saturday Qualifying Report
Two Stars today: Dally and Maria!
Dally d. Sybille Bammer 6-7(?-?), 7-6(?-?), 6-4. I saw very little of this match, but what I saw was Bammer playing VERY well - so Dally must have played up to her reputation! (Although this was no upset, with Dally seeded #6 and Bammer unseeded.)
I saw a lot of Maria Sharapova (unseeded) d. Akiko Morigami (seeded #16): 7-5, 5-7, 6-4. Maria is FOR REAL!! Akiko played very well, returning excellently, but Maria also did good returns, and had some AWESOME winners.
I think Maria was down 4-5 in the 1st, then won 3-in-a-row. Maria then went up 5-3, serving for the match, and 30-0, then 30-40, then had match-points (2, I think), then lost 4-in-a-row: 5-7. Maria then went down 2-4, and won 4-in-a-row: 6-4. WOW!
In a sense, Akiko played better, but Maria won it fair-and-square. Maria is also very entertaining and "intense" - fun to watch (and cute++!). I think she is 15, but turns 16 later this month. She has much SPIRIT!!
(By the way: I saw Maria win her way to a grade 4 juniors title barely a year-and-a-half ago, and very much enjoyed watching her then, also!)
Other observations: Milagros Sequero seems to be quite good - Cochran and Cargill are capable of playing much better than they did today (both lost miserably). Marlene retired with back-pain, but hopefully it's not real serious. I much enjoyed watching her play 3 years ago, when she looked very young. She looked more than 3 years older today, though. Robinson might be good - she lost the 1st set (3-6, then I left), but apparently won the match. She didn't look very good in that 1st set, though....
Win again, Maria!!
