Game 100: Slint - Good Morning, Captain (7th)

Got a weird theme for my debut (33.3), so I didn't have a lot of choices. I knew this from a past BSG on the other site, so it was a bit of a steal. But when I saw Slint had never been nominated before, I was too tempted to send it. I like how the song develops this deep/intense sound.

Game 103: Sheena Easton - Strut (DNQ)

A game I should have skipped (Beyoncé covers), because I wasn't able to send anything I listen to regularly. I found Easton likeable in that performance, was a decent choice for the theme I thought.

Game 104: The Residents - Dumbo The Clown (DNQ)

Here I thought I could make the final, but just missed out. I listen to more Residents stuff only since last year after buying a concert ticket. Their discography is huge, not sure I can resist to send them again in the future. Thought it was alright for a Christmas theme, where it's tough to find serious music.

Game 108: Mason vs. Princess Superstar - Perfect (Exceeder) (DNQ)

Strange that I kept playing in these exhibition type of themes (Please Adey), third in a row. This is a fun song and video for me, thought it would make the final. Also a good workout song for the women.

Game 109: LoneLady - Hinterland (5th)

I often find songs by just checking out concert schedules in my favourite locations. Here I bought the ticket after seeing Hinterland on youtube. Unfortunately it was by far the loudest ever concert. Didn't see this coming based on youtube videos I had watched before and I also had been to the location many times before and ear plugs are usually not required, so I didn't have any. Sadly Hinterland was the last song, typical for my luck, but at least this song was still enjoyable that day, extended to maybe a 6-7 minute version. :)

Game 111: The Beta Band - Dry The Rain (6th)

Another steal from the other site, but it was just perfect for the theme (weather theme). A song that seemed slow in the beginning, but after 2 minutes it really turns into a nice long song.

Game 114: Tricky - Ponderosa (7th)

This is simply my favourite from Tricky and I wanted to send it, because I never see it mentioned when people write about Tricky's best songs. Therefore I thought maybe a lot of people don't even know it. Love it right from the intro, also like Martina's voice and the wild piano finish.

Game 116: Erika Stucky - If 6 Was 9 (11th)

A bit of trolling to send this as a "grand opening". Originally wanted to send the epic opening of Gimme Shelter,:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTTXqGinwTk
but the video was a few seconds short. I liked her concert, would probably go again.

Game 117: Kumikameli - Zirkus (DNQ)

The tennis player theme was another clowning them I played for whatever reason. Two members of Kumikameli are also members of Eläkeläiset, who started as a fun side project of Kumikameli, but are much bigger now. Zirkus is the only song I know from Kumikameli that has a bit more of a fun sound to it.

Game 119: Joachim Witt - Goldener Reiter (3rd)

I wasn't sure how famous this was in other countries, but it's a very famous German songs from the early 80s (NDW). This has a nice mix between seriousness and fun, the lyrics are quite good and meaningful.

Game 121: Ini Kamoze - A Little Love (DNQ)

I skipped the Jamaica theme, so sent it here in the Late Night theme. I could have sent lots of songs here, as I have no real late night preferences. In fact, I decided to commit short term and sent a pm from the train in the last hour.

Game 122: These New Puritans - Attack Music (5th)

This is one of my favourite songs of the last 3 years. When I went to their concert, I didn't even know the song and I don't think they played it. There is an outside chance they played it, because it can take a few listens to like a song, so maybe they played it and I simply don't remember it, because it didn't impress me. "Three Thousand" however is a song they always play and is spectacular live due to the two drums. I imagine Attack Music must be awesome live as well.

Game 123: Mary Ocher - On The Streets Of Hard Labour (DNQ)

I thought this would be different from the other songs in this theme. There were themes in the past, where I considered this song as a 'troll submission', but here it felt like a serious one. Once again, I came across this song on youtube due to checking out concert schedules. I think some of her music can be called avantpop.

Game 124: Teleman - Not In Control (live) (3rd)

3rd place, but still a bit disappointing, thought this was my first chance to win after listening to the other songs...No 12 points either. Teleman are a good live band with a lot of catchy indie pop/rock songs. 'Not In Control' is different from their other stuff and only a hidden track on their first album, while at the same time can be considered as good for driving, unlike their other songs. I thought it makes sense to introduce this rather unknown song here.

Game 127: The Residents - Shut Up! Shut Up! (DNQ)

Went through some of their albums lately, trying to find something nice.

Game 128: Mo-Do - Super Gut (DNQ)

Just wanted to express my sadness about his early death. It was the follow up on his Number 1 ( :tape: ) hit 'Eins, Zwei Polizei' in the 90s.

Game 129: Bersuit Vergarabat - Huayno 14 (14th)

I've seen this one live in summer 2014, opener of the concert. Famous band in Argentina. They started the concert like 90 minutes late for no reason, but it seems to be normal for them.

Game 130: 2raumwohnung - Ich und Elaine (4th)

This was a bit of a second option in several of the previous games. The cd version of the song is actually quite different.

Game 131: Night Beats - H-Bomb (4th)

It fit the theme nicely, a not so famous band and their debut song is my favourite song. It's not my genre though and their show didn't offer any other highlights for me. They didn't even play H-Bomb.

Game 132: Saul Williams - List of Demands (6th)

A song I found only the day this game started, when I checked for concerts again. Thought it was a lot of passion/fire in it.

Game 133: Suuns - Pie IX (12th)

I saw this band once, especially wanted to hear 'Up Past The Nursery' live and it was good. Just went quickly through some other songs before sending it and discovered the equally good 'Pie IX'. Ended up sending this as it is a bit more outside the box. 12th is not a good finish for this song I think.

Game 134: Genesis - Mama (DNQ)

The song was used in an intense scene in Magnum P.I. and I liked it. :) The Collins laugh alone would have deserved the final.

Game 135: John Grant - Pale Green Ghosts (5th)

This feels like a bad 5th place to me, imo too many zero pointers for the best song in the game. This is also a very good live song, I can recommend this.

Game 136: Ros Sereysothea - Have You Seen My Love (DNQ)

Fun song. I know this only from a bar scene in the nice b-movie "City of Ghosts", which plays in Cambodia.

Game 137: Trixie Whitley - Irene (9th)

A nice song about hurricane Irene. She usually performs with a band, but there was no good version available. She plays in Europe quite often, her mother is from Belgium.

Game 139: Alice Gold - Runaway Love (19th) (Grand Slam game)

It is strange how she has disappeared in the last 4 years. I rate her as a good acoustic performer with guitar, based on some videos I saw years ago. You can't see it in this famous song of course, it was simply the first and only one of few that came to my mind, featuring Paris and New York. I should have skipped this game.

Game 140: Imarhan - Tahabort (10th)

A younger touareg band, a cousin of Tinariwen's bass player is in this band. I never went to Tinariwen or Tamikrest, so I can't compare it, but this was one of my best concerts this year. Another possible choice was the song "Imarhan", which has a nice intro:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YKmRKcYW90

Game 141: Oum Shatt - Power to the Women of the Morning Shift (3rd)

I like the drummer of the band from previous concerts, so I follow his work a bit. It's a song from 2013 (EP), but their first album came out only in 2016. From listening to the cd, no song sounded perfect to me, but several are nice, while "Power..." is immediately catchy. So initially I wanted to give it more time and also wait for their concert in November before I make up my mind. A bit strange that I chose a voice I don't like in a game about male voices.

Game 142: The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer - Do Watcha (19th)

I didn't want to nominate the same group twice, so had to find another Canadian band than Suuns. This one has a bit of a trash factor for me, more like party music, not proud of nominating it. I saw them live once by accident (they were support band somewhere) and it's a funny live band for sure. They create a good sound for a duo (at least drum, guitar, harmonica), sounds like on the record.

Game 143: Tunng - Bullets (17th)

This band sounds pretty good live, another must-see band. This is probably their most famous song and one of their best. The lyrics give a lot of room for interpretation, they are not exactly uplifting, but the sound of the song certainly is. Surprised about this poor result unlike the game before.

Game 144: Jesse Winchester - Step By Step (14th)

This song got a bit attention when it was used in the ending scene of season 1 in The Wire. This was also the first time I heard of him and I just loved this scene and the relaxing sound. I was always wondering how this song would sound live, but unfortunately there is nothing to find. I guess it was just one of his many songs and completely unknown before The Wire, not one he often played live if at all. Unfortunately he already died in 2014.

Game 146: Supergrass - Richard III (16th)

The theme was numbers, so there wasn't a whole lot to select from. Just did some searching and found this song a few days before the game started. It is different from what I normally send and they also hadn't been nominated before, so this was appealing.

I love how you broaden your musical taste by attending or checking out concerts! :yeah: You'd be surprised how few people on this forum (BSG threads) do that, a lot of them have confessed of never having attended a concert. I think this is a crucial way to get to know and value music!

#6 ·
I saw 2raumwohnung as well couple of years ago, but not the song as far as I remember, at least not this version. The cd version is quite different, but this video version was very catchy so I chose it. "Spiel mit" is the song I like the most from this duo.

10/20 top ten finishes so far.

I'm looking forward to his concert. I didn't want to go to hip-hop anymore, because I always thought that it rarely sounds good or better live, but in this case I expect some interesting preaching.

Game 133: Suuns - Pie IX (12th)

One of my best submissions so far. I saw this band once, especially wanted to hear 'Up Past The Nursery' live and it was good, they made it sound like on the record. I just went quickly through some of their other songs close to the deadline and discovered 'Pie IX'. Ended up sending this as it is even a bit more outside the box. 12th is not a good finish for this song I think. This is one of the bands I want to see again.

Game 134: Genesis - Mama (DNQ)

I wouldn't send sth like that in a normal theme, but I don't know enough unknown stuff from the 80s. The song was used in a great intense scene in Magnum P.I. and is legendary for me because of that. :) Tbh, the Collins laugh alone would have deserved the final.

Game 135: John Grant - Pale Green Ghosts (5th)

This feels like a bad 5th place to me, imo too many zero pointers for the best song in the game. This is also a very good live song, I can recommend this. I appreciate synths in live music.

Game 136: Ros Sereysothea - Have You Seen My Love (DNQ)

A song I only know from a nice b-movie called "City of Ghosts", which plays in Cambodia. Maybe I should have saved this for an OST theme.

After the concert yesterday I think that "Hot Hot Cold Cold" is their best song, live for sure, which means I messed up another BSG entry, although I had listened to it several times before. The intro is a bit different/better on the cd version:

In general I think it is a good cd with a lot of good, catchy guitar play and a must watch live.

Game 148: Allah-Las - Sacred Sands (9th)

This was an open game and I sent something I only discovered a few weeks earlier on youtube, even though the band had been submitted before. This is just nice easy listening from start to finish, didn't think anyone could not dislike/not appreciate it. Their music sounds good in general from what I have heard so far, has to be a clear must watch live. Unfortunately future shows in any smaller venue would probably be packed, as they even had a sold out show in Zurich last Monday.

Game 149: The Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble feat. Emika - Pretend (2nd)

In this game we had to send a song expressing "angst", so I remembered this song I had only discovered recently. Here it was necessary to use the live version due to the much bigger angst factor. I found the sound of this awesome the first time I saw it, the best being 3:56-4:10. I just couldn't imagine anyone would dislike this and stop after 2 minutes, although some posters probably did. I didn't manage to get points from the people who rarely listen to the songs carefully. Just like in the last game with "Sacred Sands", I sent this song quite early, which means I'm confident in the song. This was probably the first time I had to expect to win before the game even started.

I saw Brandt Brauer Frick live, but without ensemble, just the three guys (2 on synths and 1 on drums) with a few singers. So unfortunately a whole different thing to that ensemble show in Brugge, still okay, but maybe too much focused on the techno element. I found only "Holy Night" to be another possible BSG submission:

Obviously I underachieved points wise. The mods banning Silent Bird prevented him from playing, which cost me. Also special thanks to @Serena-rules-no1 for not voting in the final after 12 in the semi, although it was very obvious this was my song.

Game 150: Eivør - Brotin (6th)

A very good artist to submit, a true must watch concert. Unfortunately I saw her four days after the game, which made it tougher to select the best song. At first I wanted to nominate "Salt", a love song for the ocean:

Would have been a good choice, maybe the most popular song at the concert.

I chose the good video and catchiness of Brotin over the songs with better singing. The one thing I didn't like so much was the chorus of the song, but it got better over time for me, so I ended up sending it.

"Trøllabundin" is very popular also (2.6 million youtube views on main video), one of the songs where she makes her weird noises, scaring the ghosts away:

And a nice short song:

I was surprised how popular she is, she sold out several concerts on this tour. Very good, even if sold out "only" means 250, because I see so many concerts with <50 attendance, when I expected them to be a bit known.

151 Theodor Bastard - Takaya Mija (11th)
"Declare independance"-theme. My favourite song from this band. Went to see them live a couple of years ago only because of this song, a shame only about 15 other people went. They sounded good, almost the same as on record.

154 Pictish Trail - Far Gone (9th)
"Surprise Surprise"-theme. Not sure anything I send can be surprising at this point, but I decided to send something I discovered recently when checking out concerts for Leeds. This one sounded very good to me on first listen. I didn't find any other song from him I would submit here though.

155 Spoek Mathambo - Control (DNQ)
Trippy songs-theme. Not sure how it fit the theme, but this was certainly one of my best submissions. It's a cover of the Joy Division song, really love the wild beat in this one. Missed his concert in 2016, because I had already bought a ticket for something worse/trashy. Surely my biggest regret of 2016. No idea why something this enjoyable missed the final?!

157 Martina Topley-Bird - Carnies (6th)
Fanboy submission for her work with Tricky. I already nominated her in "Tricky Ponderosa", like her voice. I recently saw this cover version on youtube, then realized the original won a BSG game here:

159 Giannis Aggelakas - O Hamenos Ta Pairnei Ola (DNQ)
Movie song theme. Bad to finish last here, as I really didn't like the quality of this game. I didn't even watch this movie, but saw the song live and thought it would sound different than the rest. Kinda expected though, as TF dislikes this type of "singing".

161 Snakefinger - Man In The Dark Sedan (DNQ)
Open game theme. I used this to send one of my best recent discoveries. A man who played with the Residents for a while. Died quite early and this is his most famous song, for me very enjoyable throughout. Almost as enjoyable as Spoek Mathambo, so finishing last in my semi yet again was unbelievable.

163 Sona Jobarteh - Mamaké (1st)
World Cup-theme. Sent another African artist after Imarhan and Spoek Mathambo. She is from England/Gambia and known for her "kora"-play. The sound of her songs is often quite happy, but I went for this more relaxing sound. I saw her live as well and don't remember any song I liked more than Mamaké, which she didn't play unfortunately.

Congrats on winning a BSG anywhere. About time given the consistent quality of your selections and your bravery at times. :worship:

Maybe you can help me win one in Game 166. I sent a nice recent discovery, hipsterish but with a good nod to the classics at the same time. Even the best vultures may find it hard to beat.

Game 165: Billy Ocean - Loverboy (DNQ)

Game 166: clipping. - bout.that (DNQ)
Not each of their songs is easy on the ears due to the noise they are using, but this one definitely is. I was unfortunate last year when their concert was cancelled due to illness, would have been something different for me. The rapper is also busy as an actor and they have all other projects, so we can't expect new stuff from them too frequently I guess.

Game 167: alt-J - Fitzpleasure (DNQ)
One of the best bands out there. Deep music with mysterious lyrics and usually interesting stories behind the songs. If you hear a song of their first album especially, you usually wonder what the song is about, as the lyrics are mysterious at first. At least intelligent people do.

It is rude, well it’s not rude, it’s graphic and it’s violent. It’s based on a book by Hubert Selby Jr [Last Exit to Brooklyn]. Each chapter is about a different character and they all intertwine throughout the book. There’s a woman called Tralala so that’s why we sing [sings] Tra-la-la-la there’s a character called Tralala and it’s just about her. So basically the phrase is ‘in your snatch fits pleasure, broom shaped pleasure’ so fits and pleasure and Fitz like a second name, like Fitzpatrick so we thought Fitzpleasure, so more subtle. But it’s about the end of the chapter where she gets, er, gang-raped, so it’s really horrible.
Who read the book?
I did. I always believe that you write about what moves you and although that gang-rape scene is horrible… it really moved me, it’s really well written, you don’t really know which way is up after that chapter. I thought it was a really powerful thing to write about.
The whole world is excited about their third album to be in early June. The first two songs are already on youtube and good.

In a smarter forum I wouldn't have sent alt-J, as they are quite famous (most songs over 10 million views), but I thought maybe here some people don't know this exciting song yet.

Game 172: Renaldo and The Loaf - Improbable Legs (12th)
One of those band I know because of they are mentioned on Residents related websites. They made a surprising comeback after almost 30 years in 2016 with a new album. I can highly recommend listening to this at least once: https://klanggalerie.bandcamp.com/album/gurdy-hurding

Improbable Legs is just one of several catchy songs on that album.

Their song Hambu Hodo from 1987 is quite something. :tape: Some see similarities with Macklemore's chorus from "Thrift Shop", e.g. from 3:10:

Game 173: Knorkator - Highway to Hell (DNQ)
A good band from the metal/comedy genre. They have also made some creative covers such as this one. I couldn't expect anything but a semifinal exit here.

Game 175: Meredith Monk - Do You Be (DNQ)
The theme was "3 word songs" and I chose to check out Meredith Monk's catalogue for 3 word titles, as she is a legend that I can't get out of my head since last year. I was happy with that selection, found the instrumental quite hypnotic and it was also a grower for me. As expected, definitely not a great choice for the "silent majority".

Game 176: New Candys - Meltdown Corp. (2nd)
It was a big open game of 46 songs, so not the worst result. New Candys are one of my discoveries from this year. I was rather lucky to see them in a pub in Sheffield for free (I don't think they should play in venues like that). If you like this song, their last two albums are really worth listening to. Really like those guitar intros, "Volunteer" is another one of my faves.
