Re: Donna Vekic - Volume 2
Well, the better player sure won the day.
Donna kept her cool and played some good quality tennis in the initial stages, but then lost the focus once she was faced with a really solid resistance from the other side. Soon enough her error count went up, and in the end it was obvious who'll come out on top even several games before the match actually ended. Serve was pretty good, but it's not enough to win this sort of a match. Long rallies almost all went Belinda's way (deservedly so), as Donna found herself clueless as to what to do once the point extends pass the third or fourth shot. Her anticipation and reaction times mid-point were really bad, and when she is faced with someone who is multi-layered and who can cope with her power, she is in trouble.
Altogether, it's not the end of the world as the end of age restrictions allows Donna to play much more now, so just one win in each of the next two events would be enough to restore a good part of the ranking points. But that's not the real issue here. As time goes by she'll be facing more and more of the "Bencic types", and her game is not ready to routinely take care of such matches. The development of her game is not going as well as one would hope in the last year or so, and her ranking is paying the price.
The fact that her coach got fed up with her attitude (at least today) is indicative of possible frustration on his side as well and it'll be interesting to see how she'll react to this now. Her ego certainly took a blow today, courtesy of both, her own coach and Belinda Bencic.
Oh well, onto Eastbourne...
