Re: Donna Vekic

Playing Q would be better in terms of points: Donna would have an excellent chance at 40 or 50 points as opposed to a very iffy chance at 100 points.

But MD would be much better in terms of money: Donna would automatically get R1 prize money of around, what, $25K, which is significant.

I also think she wouldn't be able to qualify as there are so many good players in qualifying.
Reaching GS MD at 16 years of age is something special so I still think that it would be best if it happens.

Not likely but it's possible for cut-off to be lower than 108. That's if all top 108 players sign up *and* so do any players with protected rankings.

I think the only player with a protected ranking in top 108 is Dulgheru. And it seems pretty sure Kanepi isn't playing so top 108 should make it in.

Re: Donna Vekic

When was the last time a 16 year old made it to a GS MD on their own ranking anyways?

I also hope she doesn't draw a Top 10 player (aside from the obvious reasons) because I'm probably only getting ground passes the first few days and don't want her to be on RLA or Hisense

Anyway after $75K Dubai this week we'll know She should make it in though
Have a great time Blue.

If Donna does get into the MD through her ranking (which would be one hell of an achievement) I really hope she's able to win her first match. It's been way too long since there's been a really young player who has been able to cut it on the main tour.

Re: Donna Vekic

I was undecided before but now I agree that I'd prefer donna to be in MD direct. It's a big accomplishment that only elite players achieve at such a young age. And the $$$ will only help her to play other events. A first round win would be absolutely incredible, but not impossible!

Re: Donna Vekic

Just to summarise, the cutoff for the Australian Open maindraw is based on the WTA rankings of this Monday, 3rd December. Donna needs to be #108 or higher to officially get direct acceptance into the Australian Open maindraw. She's provisionally #106. The only players who can overtake her are those playing $75K Dubai this week. The ones who could potentially overtake her are Kristyna Pliskova, Elina Svitolina, Karolina Pliskova, Kimiko Date-Krumm and Yulia Putintseva.

It seems that Dulgheru is the only player able to use a SR, so really Donna needs to be at least #107 and only one of those five players can overtake her in order for her to make it in.

Here are the rounds that those five players need to reach to overtake Donna.

Kr.Pliskova: second round
Svitolina: semifinal
Date-Krumm: semifinal
Ka.Pliskova: final
Putintseva: final

Svitolina and the Ka.Pliskova have already won their first rounds, the other three are yet to play.

The way the draw is done makes things a bit more complicated. For example, it's impossible for Putintseva to be in the final if Svitolina is in the semifinal (as they're in the same quarter and they could potential play in the quarterfinals). It's the exact same situation for Ka.Pliskova and Date-Krumm. Kr.Pliskova is in a different quarter to the others, and only needs a second round to overtake Donna anyway. So basically a maximum of three of these players can overtake Donna. So at worst Donna will be #109 and if Dulgheru chooses to use her SR she'll need to rely on two withdrawals to get direct entry into the maindraw, probably Kanepi (who is apparently extremely unlikely to play) and one other.

If she just misses out she's going to be relying on people withdrawing, but I want Donna to get in on her own accord to be 100% sure.

I don't know about you guys but I'm going to be watching these results very closely Hope I didn't confuse you all but I think I have it right All in all she'd need the worst possible outcome for Dubai to happen, plus Dulgheru to use her SR, plus less than two people ranked above her to withdraw for her not to make it in It's fairly certain she'll just scrape in though.

Yeah, maybe for the best that she didn't break 100 in 2012! Makes her more likely to win in 2013!

Re: Donna Vekic

Donna is so close now but only one more player can exceed her points total before her top 108 ranking is lost. I dontvthink this will happen but it could. Still watching Dubai unfold closely.
