Lindsay def. Vera 16 62 75
Lindsay apparently had a cramp in her foot in the first set and called the trainer to get it straightened out. But also it seems that she was struggling because of the wind, which is what I was thinking during the match. I remember that some wind caused her some trouble this summer against Suarez. But she says that she is here to get used to the conditions, so I hope she is doing just that:
Lindsay Davenport showed that she has recovered from the foot surgery that brought an early end to her 2003 season, surviving a three-set battle with Vera Zvonareva, 16 62 75. Davenport, the No. 4 seed this week, will again be put to the test in the quarterfinals, where she'll face No. 6 seed Elena Dementieva, a 62 63 winner against fellow Russian Elena Bovina.
Following the win, Davenport said, "I'm happy that I was able to turn it around, play better, and in the end just be able to pull out the close match. I think she played very well, especially in the beginning. She was going for a lot of big shots and seemed to handle the wind much better that I did in the beginning."
"I came here because I wanted to get used to the wind and the heat. Today, I got the wind; maybe tomorrow I'll get the heat (smiling)."
Lindsay and Corina also beat Martina/Lisa 76 36 63. Lindsay sure has been playing a lot of tennis, let's hope it's doing her more good than bad for Australia. I think she'll be fine because she has a month break after OZ then Tokyo, so she should be okay.
Great fighting Lindsay!!
