Lindsay in New Haven

Lindsay can get #1 back here.

Lindsay proved herself as a successful number one, plus, she's a successful businesswoman. At 29.

She beats Maria in every category.

#1 ranking. #1 WINNER. #1 body. Oh, and that little 6-0 6-0 DOMINANCE.

That's right. Lindsay is going to kick ass here.

If Maria pulls out of Toronto as well with the injury then the Number One Ranking and Seeding is ours through US Open, also with Lindsay playing a heavy Fall European Indoor season we may hang on all the way through to end of year and Maria has quite a few points defend including a final at the Tier One event in Switzerland. YAY!

No, she's not going to be the #1 seed at the US Open, even if Maria doesn't play Toronto.

I'm looking forward to Lindsay giving us an injury update. I'll be gutted if it's not good news.

As of yesterday, she was still 50/50 for New Haven, which is kind of concerning given that her first New Haven match is still ten days away.

That's not good at all. I really don't want her to skip the US Open, it's probably her favourite tournement and along with Wimbledon it's certainly the grandslam that is most suited to her game.

This doesnt sound promising-does anyone know exactley what the problem is with her back? I know its a lower back muscel strain-I never had one of this, but i thought muscel strains...could recover quite quickly as long as rest was enforced?

Its ben 6 weeks since lindsay played now....does anyone eles think this may be a little more serious than 1st anticipated?

Yes, with rest most can make a speedy recovery, but this isn't always the case.

And Lindsay just played two and a half weeks ago. I think that was the main issue. She came back too soon. Had she waited, I don't think she'd be in this kind of a situation right now. It was probably a mistake to come back so soon.

The latest update is that Lindsay has just started to hit again in the last few days, and is working daily with her physical therapist. Her chances of playing New Haven right now are 50/50. But, there are still at least 12 days until her first match, so there's still alot of time. My feeling is that if Lindsay is not comfortable with playing by the Sunday before the tournament, she'll pull out, but that's just my opinion.

I really have to question her training routines. Notice that the majority of her major injuries in recent years have come during hitting sessions - foot in New Haven 03, les at US Open 04, leg at Australian Open 05, leg at Tokyo 05, leg at Charleston 05, and back at Stanford 05. Maybe Adam/Lindsay/physio need to try to recognize an potential injury before it turns more serious.

Thats a pretty good point Andrew, and something I noticed at Wimbledon this year.

I'm Birmingham, Hype used to spend over 30 minutes warming up, and I mean, a proper warm up. She would jog slowly around the court, do all these leg routines, and have this sretchy elastic band thing, and literally worked every muscle she has, really slowly. I remember thinking that she must have been really warmed up. She did all of this before hitting a ball.

At Wimbledon, Lindsay walked onto court and just hit straight away, whilst Jill Craybas, on the court next to Lindsay, was warming up with the stretchy elastic thing.

Women's tennis sucks.

Go Rafa.

When I saw Lindsay hitting [on TV] at Wimbledon it was very intense, she was moving constantly... it can't be good for her energy level.

I personally think that Lindsay's back injury was caused by the conditions when she played Amelie at Wimbledon and then when she had her fall and then it was majorly stressed in the final.

I hope Lindsay hasn't started hitting too soon, I'd rather she just rested a bit longer rather than risk a relapse. Lindsay hasn't missed a US Open in 13 years.

i watched her warm-up for the final in B'ham too. She did do everything very steady. She even had a fun, light-hearted game of footie (Soccer to our USA friends) with her dad and 2 trainers. I think she even warmed up longer than she hit for - at first I thought that seemed a bit strange but it makes sense.

A few years ago, sort of when the Williams sisters started winning GS's (especially Wimby) there was a documentry on CH4 in the UK called, "The Williams Story" (I still have it on tape) and there are many shots of them just doing warm-up/strentching excersizes. They did hit some balls, but most of the work-outs were with medicine balls, "bungee bands" and even an excersize where they just tossed old rackets and baseball bats through the air - like in a service motion but releasing the racket/bat at the top of their service motion. A great way to warm up the arm, I thought.

So yeah, Andrew you have a valid point on the warm-up thing......however, we can't always go by what we see on court with Lindsay. We wouldn't know if mybe she's done 5/10mins gentle pace on the tredmill or bike. Maybe Lindsay is more one to warm-up indoors. However, there is certainly a problem, one way or the other in the way she prepares.

When I was at Wimby watching her practice, she had her trainer on court but she didn't appear to do anything only hold a racket and retreive some balls for Lindsay and Adam.....(mmmm, lovely Adam ).....where was I.....oh yes, so what's the point in Lindsay's trainer being on the practice court if they're not gonna do any stretches/warm-ups - she never even seemed to be offering advice on anything. But hey, what do I know?!

No its not. Maria will take over the number 1 ranking week after next regardless of what Lindsay does. She dosen't even have to play this week to get it. So Lindsay will be the number 2 seed for the US open. But look it this way she was the no 2 seed when she won two of three slams. It might be an omen. But Lindsay will get it back after the US open with all the tournments she playing she only defending champ in one and didn't play much tduring that time last year.
