Lindsay to reach #1 for the first time in three years...

... ifshe wins he first match this week! It'll be either against Safina or a qualifier - can you say cakewalk? This would put her in the quarterfinals and assure her the #1 ranking for next week (and most liekly the rest of the season), since, sadly enough, Mauresmo has wthdraw with that leg injury. I'm sure Davenprt would have gotten to the top anyway.

Andrew already posted this news on the Moscow thread and maybe it doesn't deserve its own thread, buthey, I did it anyway!

Can we think of all the tournaments that put Davenport at #1 in the past? I know the first was Filderstadt 1998 (she reached the finals that week, methinks, and that was enough) and that carried her through the rest of the year as the top player. I remember Wimbledon 1999 got her back to #1 since she won it while Hingis lost in the first round. Obviously the YEC 2001. Now it looks like Moscow 2004. I'm sure there were others in 1999 and 2000 but I can't remember!

Safina isn't a cakewalk, but it's almost certain she'll be #1 .

She should be considering the way that Lindsay's been playing.

Safina has found her form recently and is starting to look dangerous again.

It's a bit of an anti climax to become number one from a first round match, but I guess getting it in the Filderstadt final by default would have been similar.

I'm not gonna congratulate Lindsay or assume anything because tennis is so unpredictible.

Lindsay Davenport

Elena Bovina | Anastasia Myskina | Flavia Pennetta
Fernando Verdasco | Tommy Haas

Q. Give us an update on the kid.
A. Are you serious?

But she still doesn't have any major weapons.

I will congratulate her when she wins in the 2nd round which i imagine she will do. She deserves the no 1 spot and I am sure she will get it. Lets hope she holds onto it until the end of the year

It's highly probable that she will hold onto the #1 spot since Lindsay has no points at all to defend for the rest of the year. Everyone else around her has points to defend. Provided Lindsay stays injury free then I don't see why she can't hold onto the number one spot!

C'mon Lindsay

It's very paradoxal because the moment she wants to retire is the moment she plays her best!!! She should change her mind and keep playing as she still can win gran slams right now!!! I hope she won't retire after the OA and she'll keep playing until the end the 2005 season!!! Go Lindsay and try to win this match against Safina!!!!!!

Proud to be your fan Lindsay
