Lindsay vs. Venus, Stage 3 of Summer 2004

So they both won and this highly-anticipated match will take place. Let's realistically discuss what is likely to happen.

Okay I felt that Lindsay's best match so far was in the first round, she was hitting the ball really well like she has been all summer. In her second round, she was off and on, but still way good enough. Against Bovina (I only saw the first set because that's all they showed) I felt like she was making a lot of errors, especially off the return of serve. She wasn't playing as well as she was, say, when she beat Venus and Serena this year. She did step it up when she had to in the tiebreak; that is one thing that I love about Lindsay, she goes for some RISKY shots on huge important points. I swear I will have heart problems "when I grow up" because of them, but fortunately she usually comes out on the winning end of them! I heard that she played better in the second set, even hitting a "nervy" backhand dropshot break point down. She was never broken. She has been serving well all tournament and has the best winning percentage on first serves for the whole US Open at 84%.

She obviously needs to serve well against Venus and break down Venus's forehand.

Venus has not really looked impressive in any of her matches, even though she said herself that she felt really good last night against Chanda. Lindsay needs to hold serve easily and really attack Venus's second serve. If she is confident and in a good mood (*fingers crossed*), then this win would be HUGE, as she would face Asagoe or Daniilidou in the quarters and then probably Justine in the semis, if they both make it that far.

BEST OF LUCK TO LINDSAY, WE BELIEVE IN YOU!

I think her best match was last night. She played very well, considering Bovina's first set form was that which killed Alyona in New Haven. Venus was crap against Chanda, as she has been throughout the tournament. If Lindsay serves well, she wins this match. A big thing will be capilalizing on the break points. She's had problems converting them this week, and also in her last two meeting against Venus.

It should obviously be close as they are equally matched however if someone is to win easily it has to be Lindsay. For the first time in years Lindsay will be playing against a Williams sister as a favourite. The questions are not about Lindsay but whether Venus can raise her game. Strange situation for Lindsay fans.

yeah this match is gonna be THE match of the tournament i rekon! Its just a shame its come so early in the draw, as would haev been an exellent final!

i agree lindsay has to stay positive and has to serve well. If she can do this then she can get venus on the backfoot from the start and then show dominance with her heavy groundies! Its massively important that lindsay stays upbeat even if she goes down a break......cause if she gets negative she could find that venus runs away with the set or game. If venus knows lindsay is down then she'll up her game and that could be devastating for lindsay.

To be honest i thikn lindsay could be a little nervous about this match as am i.....just because no one really knows what state of mind venus is in at the moment(especialy after her interview at Rubinds match). She's gonna be unpredictable.....playing someone like that is always gonna be tough for the other player.

I think both players are gonna be siked up for this match, and i believe the winner will have a very good chance of winning the tournament.

Venuses forehand is the one that breaks down.....this is what lindsay must attack....right from t he start too....getting off to a good start with give lindsay posisivity....and would probably put doubt in venuses mind.

Lets hope its a big win for LINDSAY! I truely believe if lindsay can stay positive and serve well she'll win in 2 sets 6-4 6-3.

All my fingers and toes crossed for you lindsay! GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope Lindsay will win, but you know, Venus is very pretencious, especialy against Lindsay, she doesn't want to loose anymore. Do you remember, she to in an interview that when she was trailing 1-9 against Lindsay, in the head to head, if she would have lost another match, she would have killed herself, so to, Venus will try to play her best in that match, to her, it's the match she mustn't loose. So I hope Lindsay will play well and not do a lot of errors. She will have to stay positive. I'm very nervous!!!!!!!! Go Lindsay and kick Venus's ass!!!!!!! ;-) I hope that all Lindsay's fan are behind her!!!!!!!!

Proud to be your fan Lindsay

we are probably not going to get to see the match now as the coverage stops at 6pm Eastern and Agassi will still be going or barely finished by then!

I ended up watching this match because the time it started was just after 7am in the morning so I was up

I was going back and forth from the tv to computer screen everytime Lindsay served because I was freaking out that she would get broken <g>

I can't believe she won in straight sets - that last game was just so darn nervewracking - good thing is she didn't drop her serve once in the match - and only had to save the 4 BPs at the end *sigh*

Can't wait for the post-match press conference on this one <g>

LOL, yeah, that final game was nerve wrecking for me too - I just wanted it over with. I had a depourate call of nature in that final game and I though, "oh, I can hold it for one more game" and low and behold it seemed to go on forever. I didn't want to leave the TV in case Lindsay did win and I would have missed her reaction.

Her reaction was great and very possitive. She now leads Venus 13-12 in the series, on top of that Lindsay now has a 20 match winning streak.....how long will it go on for? mmmmm....

What a great match it was! I managed to watch it from 5-4 in the first. Lindsay was winning all her service games easily and only faced break point in that final game.....which I think from now on it will be one of those things that will be referred to as "The Game" just like the match vs Mary Pierce in the USO 1999 is known as "THE Match Against Mary Pierce" where lindsay saved 4 mp's!? Lindsay seems to have hit and gone beyond that kind of form! She's in Championship form!

Here's to the rest of the US Open, let's hope it's just as exciting towards the end with a joyous win by Lindsay!

Go Lindsay!
