14 yo Lulu (born April 14, 2001) who lives in Geneva has just made her first G18 final this week in Taiwan (at G4 MIan-Chang Cup International Junior Championships)!
Unseeded but looming, she beat (Q)Moyuka Uchijima 7-6(1) 6-2 in R1, Yuki Naito 6-7(1) 1-2 ret. in R2, Funa Kozaki 4 & 1 in QF and (Q)Naomi Cheong (who routined top seed Naho Sato in QF) 2 & 3 in SF
before ultimately falling to Yuki Ando 2 & 2 in the final today.
Her 2nd best result this year is a SF appearance at G5 Malahide Java Republic ITF Under 18 in July in Dublin (she was the 8th seed there and fell to unseeded Alice Gillan in SF, 4-6 6-3 0-6
); she also made a QF appearance at her first tournament this year in New Zealand at G4 Wilson Tennis Canterbury ITF.
She also played 7 times at 10K SES in May and June, and made it to the R2 5 times out of 7 tries
- with notable R1 wins over (7)Alexandra Riley (WTA 753), 2 & 2
and she also played a close R2 match against 2nd seed Alice Matteucci (WTA 433, and now a Top 400 player), "only" losing 6-7(5) 3-6.
So she seems somewhat promising even though she also seems pretty inconsistent.
And I love her game.
She has a big sister (born in 1998) who is also playing tennis (even though she isn't having good results
) and who has an even more priceless name: Phenomena
Lulu is currently #721 (CHR 714) in juniors, and #1161 (CHR 1133) at the WTA. Phenomena is currently #858 (which is a CHR) in juniors, and unranked at the WTA (even though she used to have a ranking in the 1200s).
GL to her (and Phenomena )
in the future!
