Re: Maia Lumsden

On another note, I think I may have been pronouncing Maia's name wrong in my head. I imagined it to rhyme with Gaia, but I think I heard her coach rhyme it with layer. More evidence is required. I'll stick with my first thought for now.

Ah, I'd have assumed your first thought too.

What about Freya? I'd assume she was a player, not a plyer, but I'm not sure about that, either.

Anyhow excellent result for Maia to sink the third seed and join Katy D in the Sunderland semis. Arcangioli next.

Re: Maia Lumsden

Panic over. It's like Gaia. I must have just had trouble picking up her coach's diction (even though his accent is somewhere in the vicinity of Southern English Received Pronunciation).

Re: Maia Lumsden

Sadly Maia lost a squeaker against Arcangioli but a very creditable performance to go down 7-6 (7-5) in the third set tiebreak.

Re: Maia Lumsden

Seems like a good couple of weeks for her.

Re: Maia Lumsden

Yeah, shame they didn't give her MDWC for Wirral as I'd have said she earned it after F and SF the previous two weeks. Instead after two matches of qualifying and then winning the first set of R1 it looked like she ran out of steam this week.

Re: Maia Lumsden

Was leading for much of the match against Manon last week, perhaps her relative inexperience was the deciding factor in that match.

Seems as though she just ran out of steam this week having had to travel down to the Wirral from Sunderland after that long, tough loss and then having to play two qualifying matches pretty much without a break. It's not as though Liebens is a pushover either. Still a great few weeks for her, plus now she'll most likely get into the MD by right.

I suspect she was offered one but chose to decline it having already used her 2 out of 3 in previous UK tournaments. Saving it for a bigger event later in the year me thinks.

If she'd won her Sunderland semi, she'd have earned a SE.

Re: Maia Lumsden

I know that if and when they fill the results in at the link below, it will show the University of Stirling winning, and I'll be surprised if Maia isn't at the top of the line-up, given that she played the semi (although she retired in that match): British Tennis - BUCS Tennis League 2015/16 - Matches

Is this like a championship team winning the FA Cup?

I have to say, I hadn't understood the depth of her relationship with the University. Anyhow, here's a press piece: Stirling tennis ace gets advice from top athlete (From Strathallan Times)

I'm sceptical about her long term commitment to university education, but we'll see.
