Re: Maia Lumsden

Rather than doing what you or I might expect and moving up to ITFs (let alone playing the junior grass court season and Wimbledon), Maia has been chasing the TE 14 no. 1 ranking, which she has achieved, a share of it at least: http://te.tournamentsoftware.com/ran...0&category=516

Maia is Miss Tuesday for the ITF's series of stories on the World Junior Tennis finals: http://www.itftennis.com/126243

About to slice, presumably.

Re: Maia Lumsden

After going into the WJTF as GB no. 1, Maia played singles only in the first match.

Next up the GB 14U nationals (http://lta.tournamentsoftware.com/sp...B45730D&draw=4), where she was dumped out in today's round of 16, after which she withdrew from the doubles.

Re: Maia Lumsden

As we wait to see whether Maia is gifted her first WTA ranking point (what's up with the ITF site today?)...
Supportive mum Gillian Lumsden has helped create a top tennis trio
Quote:
Gillian refuses to be star-struck by the buzz in the tennis world about Maia’s potential.

Her daughter trains 20 hours a week and spends about 10 weeks a year playing in tournaments abroad. But Gillian is determined that Maia gets a proper education.
EDIT: Just a WCQ at her home tournament for Maia, so she'll have to work for a ranking point

Re: Maia Lumsden

Maia won her first round of qualifying over Pippa Horn, 76 63. She has to face the #1 seed Fatma Al Nabhani for a spot in the main draw.

Re: Maia Lumsden

Lumsden to play on show court in main draw debut
Quote:
She trounced Fatma Al-Nahbani, the second seed in the qualifying competition from Oman, 6-3, 6-0. One break of serve was all she needed to take the first set against a player with a world ranking of No.463 and Al-Nahbani's game then collapsed under relentless pressure from the young Scot. The win earns Lumsden a tie against England's Lisa Whybourn, the world No.298, in the main draw today.

Re: Maia Lumsden

Loses 6-7 6-3 6-1 to Whybourn....still a great effort from a 14 year old!

I haven't seen her play but her results have been pretty impressive. She was ranked #1 in Europe in U14 for a little bit earlier this year and seems to be one of several girls born in 1998 worth keeping an eye on.

Re: Maia Lumsden

After the excitement of Glasgow, Maia moves onto a G4 in Holland; one of a number of Brits there, in fact. She faced Margot Yerolymos in R1, the player with whom Gabi Taylor split finals in Morocco earlier in the month. Maia won in 3 sets.

Re: Maia Lumsden

I'm really impressed by Maia Lumsden's results. Glasgow was almost unbelievable! She'll be interesting to follow.

Simone Alipieva of Denmark (who shares birthday with Maia) recently tweeted this cute photo:

It's Maia (lying down), Gabriella Taylor (at the back), and Simone in British outfit.
