IMO:
Keothavong, Bally and Katie: All will be eager to push deeper into the top 100, and I expect they will have similar success to Anne on her first season within the top 100, with all 3 finishing near the top 50, perhaps slightly higher. I believe we will have a couple of nice little runs in the slams, perhaps a 3rd or 4th round. I think with the renewed sense of confidence and the fact that Bally and Katie will have each other to motivate and encourage them, we will see them bring the best out of their games.
Mel: Mel has dedicated a lot of time to her fitness, but I dont think her confidence recovered after blowing her lead in the FO vs MLDB. Her great run in Sydney earned her 80 points which will hit her ranking hard when they come off, however she then only has 25 points to defend until June. With her increased stamina I think she will find her game and start rising back up the rankings, its all just a matter of confidence.
Cavaday: Some people are being awfully quick to write her off. She suffered from a debilitating illness that left her very fatigued, however has now completely recovered so her form should get better. She is on the verge of the top 200 playing below par and has little to defend for the first half of the year. She should make her return to GS qualies, where she will only need a few wins to start climbing. Its a big season for Naomi, its pretty much make-or-break in terms of whether she can live up to her potential - after breaking the top 200 2 years ago it looked like she was heading straight for the top 100, and its understandably dissapointing that she isnt already there.
Heather: Most exciting player for me, as she will be making the transition to full time on the senior tour. Considering she played her first senior events this year, winning a title in her 4th senior event after a semi the event before and won a junior slam, there is no reason why 2010 wont be a great year. I expect her to break the top 500 soon (shes only about 12 points off) and I expect her to make USO qualies.
Laura: Nearly as frustrating as she is talented, I expect Laura to stay inconsistent next season, with big wins here and there. Only 6 points to defend before August - she is virtually guaranteed to make a climb up the rankings. Will be interesting to see where she plays and which WCs she gets. I have a feeling she will be in AO qualies this year though and a good draw will see her break the top 400. If she were to qualify she would just break the top 300. A couple of other big wins in big events could see her climb even higher. Im sure her team wont want to push her too hard and no. of events will be a limitation so its tough to know what to expect.
Broady: Second most exciting player IMO. She should look to make the qualifying cut off of the French Open, and is wisely stepping up to bigger events rather than mostly low-level ITFs which she stuck to last season. She has no major point defences at all really so can easily boost her ranking with good runs in events like the 50k in a few weeks and should be a safe bet for a MD WC into Wimb and other grass events. The potential is there, and I hope her great form lately is due to the recovery from her injury rather than just being much fresher than the competition.
Rae: I feel Rae is overlooked by a lot of people. She didnt play until June this year, beating a top 200 player in her first match in 6 months, won a 10k and broke the top 500, beating her CH. Wont receive much funding from the LTA so will have to earn her own cash, which could have a positive effect potentially, and I think she has proved she has the game to climb. I see her in the 200-300 range, but maybe even higher if she can stay healthy for the whole season.
Moore: Another Brit who has struggled due to injury. She was top 100 in juniors with a great game, especially on the grass and I think she still has a lot of potential. I see her rising similarly to Rae.
Other players who I feel will have the potential for a great season are Jade Curtis and Lisa Whybourn. I think Stoop should get back into the top 200 if her injury clears up, though it seems fairly serious. She was playing great tennis, including beating Katie in Vigo and pushing Zvonareva in Wimbledon - I think its clear that she is a top 200 player at least.
Amanda Carreras really puzzles me as she seems so Un-British. Her double bagel from Katie seemed to knock her confidence and her reults dipped afterwards, so it seems her game on hard isnt as good as her game on clay. She is clearly at the point where she needs to try and step up to 25k events at least.
I also hope Smith and Elliott sort their issues out, and that Anna Fitz and Emily recover from their injuries. Nicola George may also be a promising young player, she is certainly worth keeping an eye on anyway!
