Fed Cup play-off for WG II place v. Romania, April 22-23

In Constanța, Halep's home town. Will we all become experts in Romanian diacriticals?

Re: Fed Cup relegation play-off v. Romania, April 22-23

Quite old news, posting now after this morning's debacle in China. Who should the fourth team member be? Laura (despite everything)? Anna? Tara? Amanda? Katie?? I think I'd be inclined to pick Anna, though without much confidence in my choice.

Errrrhhhh.... I'd go with Anna too. All of the Romanian team are strong in singles. I think the tie is very likely to come down to the doubles match and Raith would be our best chance to beat them in doubles.. So Jo, Hev, Joss and Anna..

But hopefully Raith will go on a decent run somewhere and Heather can improve her singles form. Also, I believe Jo's first clay event will be Charleston. Hopefully she can get a good run going on the green clay and gain some confidence.

Re: Fed Cup play-off for WG II place v. Romania, April 22-23

It's a different situation from the Euro-African group. We're underdogs, plus there's no need to worry about avoiding relegation if our top player turns her ankle in the first match, so there's not a lot to lose and no need to pick a third singles player just in case.

That said, I'm afraid that our best team might be Konta, Watson, Konta/Watson, which, if Anne agrees, gives her two free picks, but is there anyone available who would stand a chance against Begu or Niculescu in singles? I don't see a better choice than Rae/Smith.

In the end, there was no good choice for the fourth team member, so sticking with the team that got us here was inevitable, and hard to argue with.

True, but on current form Tara sees to be playing better than Heather (whose horribleat the moment and they are close in rankings now) and certainly Laura. Though if Hev can clear her head and focus she is the obvious other singles player. I believe Hev-Johanna will be the doubles pairing anyway against Romania

I believe in Hev that she will raise her game for Fed Cup. Having said that, Tara has also played well at Fed Cup previously, but she's not the best on clay. But yeah, I doubt the 4th player will come into the equation anyway (although if we are getting hammered by Romania, Anne might throw Laura into a singles match just to see what happens, lol).

It's a shame it's a stacked Romania on clay, B never ever gets Fed Cup luck

Hev has played very well in Fed Cup, even sometimes when her regular tour play is horrible, and is a good doubles player.

Tara has played and won one singles match against Paszek, and played and lost one doubles match partnering Konta against Babos and Jani, both in group I in 2014.

The current team did well in February.

Re: Fed Cup play-off for WG II place v. Romania, April 22-23

I could see an argument for replacing Joss Rae with Tara, simply because doubles is played last, and if we are 2-all, the chances are, we will play Jo and Hev, as we did in the February play-off. Having Tara and Laura would give more singles options if Hev or Jo were injured.

But to be truthful, if they are injured, we are fucked in any case. We need them both to peak to stand any chance at all, and there is no disguising the fact that we are huge underdogs in this tie.

Yeah, I ahve no doubt Heather is a better actual choice, but for a long while she has been mostly awful with the odd performance and tournament since her illness has proped up her prior rankings. And she seesm to be getting worse. i can't figure it out. When you watch her play most of the timeshe just doesn't appear to care and her games are just awful She just hits the ball into the net or long constantly with absolutely no ajustment at all.

Yeah, she's frustrating. I don't know where her former feistiness has gone. Really, it seems like she only finds it for Fed Cup.

I don't see her as a real top player, but I feel she's capable of so much more than she's currently putting out there. When she gets a good result, it's there and gone. It doesn't seem like a stepping stone for her to build more confidence and consistency, as one would hope.

But still, I think she is a very clear choice for our #2 player in the Fed Cup team.

Faute de mieux.
