Estoril, Portugal (Sports Network) - Third-seeded Virginie Razzano was among Monday's first-round winners at the clay court Estoril Open.
Razzano, who rolled past German Barbara Rittner 7-6 (7-5), 6-0, was the top seed in Casablanca last week, only to lose to Rossana Neffa-de los Rios in the opening round.
France's Razzano was joined in the second round by fellow seed Iveta Benesova, as the No. 8 Czech bounced Belarusian Tatiana Poutchek 6-3, 6-1. An upset occurred when Croat Silvija Talaja took out sixth-seeded Czech Klara Koukalova 6-4, 6-4 on the red clay at Estadio Nacional.
In other first-round action, the aforementioned Neffa-de los Rios topped injured Spaniard Marta Marrero 3-6, 6-3, 3-3; Croat Jelena Kostanic snuck past German Angelika Roesch 5-7, 6-4, 6-4; and France's Stephanie Cohen Aloro routed Russian Maria Kirilenko 6-2, 6-3. Marrero gave way to a left ankle injury while tied with Neffa-de los Rios in the third set.
This week's second seed, Spaniard Magui Serna, beat German Anca Barna in last year's Estoril final. Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik is the top seed.
