Re: ***Greek Watch*** July POTM - Despina Papamichail!

September Player of the Month

ELENI DANIILIDOU

Our September 2010 player of the month is Eleni Daniilidou.
Eleni had a terrific month on the ITF women’s circuit. She first played at the $100,000 tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria. In the first round she beat Stephanie Vogt, a qualifier from Liechtenstein, 6-4 2-6 6-4. In the second round, she beat 8th seeded Anna-Lena Groenefeld from Germany 1-6 7-5 6-3. She then fell in the quarterfinals to second-seeded Tathiana Garbin of Italy, 6-2 6-4. The tournament was not over for her though, as she was seeded second in doubles with Jasmin Woehr of Germany. In the first round, they defeated the Bulgarian wildcards Germanlieva and Tomova 6-2 6-4. In the quarterfinals, they continued their winning ways, as they beat another Bulgarian wildcard team, Kostova/Pawlowa-Dimitrova 6-2 6-1. In the semifinals, they beat third-seeded Meusburger and Vedy, of Austria and France respectively, 6-3 6-1. They then went on to win the title beating the Austrian-German pair of Klemenschits and Malek, 6-3 6-4. The following week, Eleni went to the $100,000+H tournament in Saint Malo, France, where she once again played doubles with Jasmin Woehr of Germany, as the second seeds in the tournament. However, this time Eleni only played doubles. In the first round they beat the Austrian and German team of Klemenschits and Malek, 6-4 6-4. In the quarterfinals, they defeated the Swiss and Romanian pairing of Michel and Ungur, 4-6 6-2 10-8. Unfortunately, their run ended in the semifinals against the third seeded team of Koryttseva from Ukraine and Olaru of Romania, as the Ukranian and Romanian won 6-2 1-6 10-6. Eleni still had one tournament left, the $50,000 tournament in Athens, Greece at the Olympic Stadium, the largest tournament in her country. Eleni was amazing all week, as she won the title as an unseeded player. In the opening round, she upset fourth-seeded Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany, 6-3 4-6 6-4. In the next round, she faced her Greek compatriot, wildcard Stamatia Fafaliou, and she won it in straight sets, 6-3 6-1. In the quarterfinals, she beat Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor from Spain, 6-2 6-4. In the semifinals, she destroyed second-seeded Zuzana Kucova of Slovakia, 6-1 6-0. In the final, she beat third-seeded Laura Pous-Tio of Spain, 6-4 6-1 to capture the title in her home tournament. And as always, Eleni played doubles, this time with Croatia’s Petra Martic, and they were seeded third. In the first round, they beat the Greek and Russian pairing of Georgatou and Savinykh, 7-6 6-2. In the quarterfinals, they won a nail biter against the Spanish duo of Cabeza-Candela and Pous-Tio, 6-0 6-7 10-6. They continued their winning ways in the semifinals, as they beat the all-German team and top-seeded team of Barrois and Groenefeld, 6-3 6-2. Unfortunately, Eleni’s partner was injured and they had to withdraw from the final, handing the title to the second-seeded Russian and Turkish duo of Diatchenko and Senoglu.

Congratulations, Eleni!

October Player of the Month

ELENI DANIILIDOU

Our October 2010 player of the month is Eleni Daniilidou.
Eleni had a great month on the WTA tour, playing well in Linz and Luxembourg. First up was Linz. Eleni won her first qualifying match against Slovakian Lenka Jurikova, 4-6 6-2 6-0. The next round was much easier for her, as she beat Austrian Tina Schiechtl 6-3 6-2. In the third and final qualifying round, she upset third-seeded Sorana Cirstea of Romania, 6-4 6-4. This win put her in the main draw, where she upset fourth-seeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 6-2 6-4. Then she beat Austria’s Sybille Bammer in straight sets, 6-1 7-6. Her dream run to her first WTA quarterfinal since 2008 eventually ended as she then lost to the six-seeded German player Andrea Petkovic, 6-3 6-2. Eleni also played doubles in Linz with Jasmin Woehr from Germany, beating the Swedish-Austrian team of Arvidsson and Klemenschits 2-6 6-2 10-6 in the first round. Unfortunately, they lost in the quarterfinals 7-5 6-0 to the second-seeded all-Czech pairing of Benesova and Zahlavova-Strycova. Then Eleni headed off to Luxembourg without any rest from Linz, and she beat Slovenia’s Andreja Klepac 6-0 1-6 6-4 in the first round of qualifying. She then beat the sixth-seeded player, Sabine Lisicki of Germany 7-5 6-4. In the final qualifying round, Eleni totally ran out of gas as it was her 10th day in a row with a match, and she lost 6-1 6-4 to Croatian Ivana Lisjak. In doubles, Eleni once again played with Jasmin Woehr from Germany. They easily won the first match over Dekmeijere from Latvia and Lefevre from France 6-3 6-0. In the quarterfinals, however, they lost 7-6 6-3 to the Swiss and Italian team of Bacsinszky and Garbin.

Congratulations, Eleni!

December Player of the Month

ELENI KONSTANTINIDOU

Our December 2010 player of the month is Eleni Konstantinidou.
Eleni had a great month on the ITF women’s circuit. She played two $10,000 tournaments in Egypt. In the first one in Ain Elsokhna, Eleni qualified by beating Austria’s Rebecca Kaineder 2-6 7-5 6-2. She then went on to upset third-seeded Marcella Koek of the Netherlands 5-7 7-5 6-3 in the first round of the main draw, before eventually falling in the second round to Aleksandra Romanova from Russia 6-1 6-1. However, she did team up with Great Britain’s Mila Marinkovic for doubles. Unfortunately for them, they lost 3-6 7-6 10-8 to the all-Austrian team of Hirsch and Kaineder in the first round. Eleni then went on to play another tournament in Ain Elsokhna. In the first round of qualifying, Eleni easily defeated her Italian opponent, Alessia Camplone in straight sets, 6-2 6-4. She then went on to qualify for the main draw, after defeating Russia’s Nadezda Samoylo 6-1 6-2. She ran out of luck in the first round, losing to the top seed Ana Jovanovic of Serbia, 6-3 6-1. She did play doubles again, this time with Evgeniya Svintsova from Russia. In the first round, they beat the Ukranian and American team of Kharchenko and Snelen 6-2 6-2. Their run then ended in the quarterfinals, as they lost to the Ukranian and South African team of Kovalets and Simmonds, 6-2 6-0.
