Daniilidou returns to the courts where she was idolised
Lena Daniilidou returns to the court where during the Athens Olympics 2004 received the biggest standing ovation of her career so far, to compete in international professional tournament ITF $125.000 Vogue Athens Open 2009, which will be held from the 26th of September until the 4th of October in Olympic Tennis Center in OAKA with FREE ADMITANCE for the spectators. The Greek star as well as Anna Gerasimou, Eirini Georgatou and Despina Papamichail received Wild Cards into the Singles Main Draw (which will feature 20 top-100 athletes) awarded by the organisers (Liberis Publications and H.T.F.).
The participation of the top four Greek athletes adds to the interest in the tournament, which boasts a star studded field of players led by Jelena Dokic from Austaralia with a career high ranking of N. 4 in 2002 and total career prize money of 3 million dollars. Dokic will be joined by the Romanian Iona-Raluca Olaru N. 53 in the World Rankings, the Italian Tathiana Garbin N. 58 in the World Rankings, the German Tatjana Malek N. 66 in the World Rankings, her compatriot Kristna Barrois at N. 67, the Czech Petra Kvitova at N. 72, the Swiss Timea Bacsinszky at N. 73, the Romanian Monica Niculescu at N. 76, the Swiss Stephanie Voegele (N. 77), the Romanian Alexandra Dulgheru N. 78 winner in Warsaw WTA Tour tournament this year and many more...
The tournament shall commence on Sunday 26th of September with the Singles Qualifying matches and will conclude on Sunday 4th of October with the finals. It should be noted that floodlights will be used. The daily shedule shall begin at 14.00 and matches will be played until 21.00. The semifinals will start at 16.00 on Saturday 3rd of October and the finals at 14.00 on Sunday 4th of October.
The organisers have prepared off-court surprises for the tennis fans who will come to the "Vogue Athens Open 2009". Hoping to evolve the tournament into an important means of promotion for our country while at the same time promoting the sport, they have set up in the surrounding area of the courts "Tennis Village" , an interactive exhibition of companies with a main interest in tennis which will present their products and services.
