Re: Elena Dementieva Fans Club Vol 8

I've just been reading an excellent article by the table tennis player Matthew Syed about the myth of natural talent in sport, and it made me think that our Elena, with her incredible work ethic, basically proves his theory. Let me quote the last paragraph which also mentions the WTA success of Spartak players:

Quote:
"When I hit the top of the England rankings, most of the other top players in the nation were not merely from the same town as me, but the very same street: Silverdale Road in Reading, Had some ping-pong virus spread through the area without touching the surrounding roads and villages? Of course not: the success was about the coming together of factors of a similar kind to those that have, from time to time, elevated other tiny places into the sporting ascendancy (Spartak, an improverished Moscow tennis club, created more top 20 women players between 2005-2007 than the whole of the US). In particular, we all had access to a top coach (who happened to be a teacher at the local primary school) and to the only 24-hour-a-day club in the county. We started out as ordinary table tennis players but through a peculiar set of circumstances we were transformed into extraordinary players. The evidence is overwhelming: excellence in sport is not explained by talent, but by hard work, will and opportunity."
The quote is from the article "The Talent Myth" from FourFourTwo 196. Matthew Syed also wrote the book "Bounce: How Champions are Made" about the subject.

Discuss.

I agree to some extent. I definitely think natural talent is a major prerequisite for top class athletes. In the sports I watch, evident natural talent+hard work=excellent sportsperson, talent+hard work=very good competitor and there are of course sad cases of ruined talents. It's ATP, but the glaring example is Federer and Ferrer/Davydenko.
As for our Lena, I think she is an example of both hard work and talent, but the big "what if she used a sports psychologist" question is still fluttering in my mind.

Well, I can name two sports psychologists playing on the WTA tour, both of them not doing all too well.

They're both Russian, could explain a bit.

It's a shame you weren't her sports psychologist. The threat of being dismembered probably would have been enough to put her over the top.

Who else besides Chakvetadze? She had already started studying when she reached her best, so that's hardly the main reason. Her probable PTSD needs to be addressed by specialists with years of practice, not someone who's just studied in university, moreover I haven't heard of anyone using self-therapy.
You probably don't watch biathlon, but the two biggest stars there have openly said they've seen a psychologist, but they've recognized themselves they might benefits from consults. I think Lena was mostly concentrated on improving her serve, as everyone was piling on her about it. Remember her short cooperation with Richard Krajicek? I wish Lena had chosen to move to the Netherlands...

Come on, don't tell me you think I'd do something like that to Lena?!? I would exercise my powers on her opponents.

Oh, I don't think you'd actually do it to our beloved Lena.

The thing is that she would think you would. And that would have motivated her like crazy.

Abusive methods work just enough to build a 2-0 lead and lose 2-3 in the final of the Olympics. Check my favourite Russian psycho coach Karpol, founder and coach of a club team since 1969:

Please, Iva, don't degrade yourself by comparing a pussycat like him to you. Not a single fatality.

LOL, he reminds me of the legendary coach of the Russian women's handball national team, Yevgeni Trefilov. Once, he said "Fuck your mother!" on camera to one of his players Watch him in action:

BTW, the subtitles to those clips are in Danish (first part) and Norwegian (last part). In the first clip, he asks a player if her head is the sixe of a truck

If this is the prototype of a Russian coach, I suddenly understand why Lena chose Mommy Vera to remain her coach throughout her career
