The 10 Worst Losses of 2006
10. Moscow SF (#24) Chakvetadze def. (#7) Dementieva 7-5 3-6 6-0
On home soil, with an open path to the title, Elena made a signature second set comeback, and it looked as if she was on her way to another Moscow final. After leaving for her outfit change after the second, Elena was murdered by an on fire Chakvetadze in the third. Third set queen blew what was probably her best chance at a Moscow title.
9. Miami R16 (#24) Golovin def. (#8) Dementieva 6-2 6-1
Just a week after the Indian Wells runner-up finish, Elena went to Miami, where she lost just 5 games through her first two matches. Golovin was in a slump and Elena was the clear favorite, but Elena had no answers for Golovin who seemed to find her form on the right day, as she humiliated Elena.
8. Indian Wells F (#5) Sharapova def. (#8) Dementieva 6-1 6-2
After a fornight which featured many amazing three set matches from Elena, she seemed dead for the final against Sharapova, who wasn't even in her best form. Elena didn't adapt to the wind at all and rolled over in a big final.
7. Fed Cup QF (#4) Henin-Hardenne def. (#9) Dementieva 6-2 6-0
Elena had just beaten Justine that month and Kim the day before. One would expect her to be confident and fight hard, but this was like a bad Indian Wells repeat, except Elena didn't fight back this time.
6. YEC RR (#2) Sharapova def. (#8) Dementieva 6-1 6-4
Maria simply outclassed Elena in the first set, but in the second, Elena had numerous chances to take the match to three. She hit more than 15 double faults and played very passive-aggressive, allowing Maria to dismiss her with ease despite being off her game.
5. Rome QF (#19) Safina def. (#8) Dementieva 6-1 6-1
Elena had been mediocre on clay, but was still expected to win this match. Terribly off day for Elena, as her groundies flew everywhere but in the court.
4. s'Hertogenbosch SF (#55) Krajicek def. (#8) Dementieva 1-6 7-6 (5) 6-4
After easily taking care of Michaella just 3 months earlier in Miami, it looked as if Elena were on her way to a repeat as she raced to a 6-1 lead in this one. With a match point at 5-4, Elena made an error and lost her cool. Thinking the ball was in, Elena was out of sorts and unfocused for the rest of this ugly chokefest.
3. Australian Open R128 (#80) Schruff def. (#9) Dementieva 7-5 6-2
Elena shows up for the first Grand Slam of the year at her worst. After fighting back in the first set, Elena began to fall apart again. Schruff lost in the next round and did nothing for the rest of the season.
2. Luxembourg QF (#95) Radwanska def. (#6) Dementieva 7-5 6-2
Same score as Australian Open, and equal ugliness. Elena couldn't keep a ball in the court against a wildcard who was lucky to be in the quarterfinals. This Tier 2 was Elena's for the taking and she lost early to a no name.
1. US Open QF (#20) Jankovic def. (#5) Dementieva 6-2 6-1
At an event where Elena had a great chance to take home her first slam title, she gets murdered by Jankovic, who she had just defeated in an excellent match about a month prior. Elena hadn't dropped a set coming into the quarters and looked like the favorite here against a tired Jelena.
