Has Elena Dementieva got the credit she deserves?

Hello everyone,
All of us know that Elena Dementieva has not got until now what she deserves (no1 ranking and a Grand Slam win). Though she came very close to achieving these both last year but luck did not favor her as she lost in both the finals to players she could have easily beaten as she had beaten current no1 Davenport and no3 Mauresmo before reaching the finals of the French Open. She had also defeated Mauresmo before reaching the finals of U.S Open. However, in both tournaments she lost in the final, all I want to say is that the only reason why Elena Dementieva has not yet won a Grand Slam is that luck and conditions go against her at the wrong time. After all making it in to two Grand Slam finals in the same year is not a kid’s job. In addition, her inexplicable loss against Patty at the Australian Open can also be attributed to bad luck. I want to say that if this year Elena Dementieva has a bit of luck she can easily make it to the no1 ranking and also win at least one Grand Slam. Therefore, she must get the credit and the importance that she is not getting now and the limelight should be shifted on to her form Maria Sharapova. I don’t understand one thing is that why are people so crazy about Maria Sharapova? Whereas I think that Elena Dementieva is far better than her in all the departments (both looks and game). What does Maria Sharapova has that Elena Dementieva does not have. Some of you might say it is the serve. But Elena Dementieva makes up about the weak serve with the rest of her game. There fore I must say that Elena Dementieva is 100 times better than Maria Sharapova and Dementieva not Sharapova deserves to be the dream girl of tennis. Besides Elena Dementieva is sooooooooooooooooooo cute. I hope that you feel the same and there are some positive responses.

I don't know, Dementieva's fan. I completely agree with you apart from the limelight that should be shifted onto her. For as far as I know Elena she isn't the kind of girl that goes all enthousiastic over media-attention. And honestly I think Maria isn't either. But Maria has to deal with it anyway, whether she likes it or not.
I think Elena likes her mediastatus as it is now, where she doesn't get too much attention. Simply suits her the best, I think.

Thank you, Elena

Alenyaa, i know what you mean that Elena does not enjoy limelight. But what i want to say is that she deserves much better treatment that she is enjoying now. Do we get to hear as much about Elena's injuries comeback matches etc. in newspapers and T.V? Whereas everything about Maria is highlighted.

If u r Indian...

Hey friend,
If u r Indian then what u expect (that Elena should be in limelight)is not possible so early.U know what India loves is just cricket (which i hate),and nothing else. Tennis has just introduced in India(due to Sania). So,we can now just hope that tennis may also flourish like cricket & the people should also come to know that tennis doesn't mean only Maria and Serena.
And what else u said is bad-luck opposes Elena from victory. I feel it true to some extent. I feel that Elena is a little less-confident and that's the biggest reason why she loses matches.
Anyways, best luck to my most favourite Elena.

Hello elena4vrishu,
You are right, I am from India and I agree with you that Cricket is a rage here and Tennis is starting to gain popularity among the local masses with the arrival of Sania Mirza. However, it’s not like Tennis is unknown. You can read the newspapers and everything about Maria Sharapova is highlighted, not only her tennis but also her other works, there are news in the newspapers (that too in the sports column) that Maria Sharapova has launched a new perfume, about her schooling, about her injuries and about her ambitions of becoming a fashion designer and even rumors of her having an affair with Mark Philippoussis (I think it was Juan Carlos Ferrero, anyways correct me if I am wrong). Never about Demetieva. The newspapers show her photographs and guys purchase her posters, I don’t even think that Dementieva’s posters are available. I am again repeating my question; Why Sharapova, Why not Dementieva? What does Sharapova has that Dementieva does not? Some might say it is a Grand Slam in her kitty, but Dementieva has been to two Grand Slam finals in the same year she also has earned an Olympic silver medal for her country and Dementieva is as beautiful as Sharapova perhaps even more. Even in the areas where tennis is popular, not only in India but also rest of the world it’s Sharapova. If you have seen those sports shows (Sportcenter and Sportsline) in these shows too whenever there is talk about the Russian Revolution the examples given are Sharapova, Kuznetsova, Myskina and Anna Kournikova even Anna Kournikova……… who was much lowly ranked then Dementieva. I cant understand this indifference. And I think it happens in other countries as well and you can read Paco’s message he is from another country (Though I can’t make out which). All I want to say is that Dementieva is 100 times better than Sharapova and she must be treated better than she is now. I think the message is gone too long and All the best to you as well as to Dementieva and all her fans. I hope she thrashes Sharapova in a match.

I think it's because she's 17, she's got that "barbie" look and she's half American.

@ elena4vrishu, cricket is the best thing to happen to the human race!

C'mon Lena

I'd say Elena gets ENOUGH credit.

By that I mean, she's mainly known by tennis fans, or general sports fans, but not really by anyone outside of that. And really, those people's opinions are the only ones that count. She doesn't need millions of people cheering for her just because they think she's "hot". That's just a waste of time. Elena's life the life of an athelete, and those who are fans of her athletic abilities are the only ones that would matter to her. Just look at this board, Elena tends to own in regards to popularity here.

I think perhaps even on that athletic level maybe she COULD get a bit more recognition, but I don't mind. There's less pressure on her this way.

I don't really think overexposure would help her tennis career anyway. Just proves what a focused athlete she really is. Going to the top too quickly may incur a harder fall.

@ dementieva's fan: I got your point the first time, don't worry And I do agree with you up to a certain point. All I was saying is that too much attention probably wouldn't suit her. I do agree with you about the fact that she is a better player than Sharapova, but also a bit more mentally fragile.

Strange, isn't it? That a 17-year old (or is she 18 already?) is mentally more certain than a 23-year old?

Thank you, Elena

I think Elena gets enough credit already. Many people already acknowledge the enormous talent and power she packs in her groundstroke game. They also attribute that to helping her make 2 Slam finals and win 4 titles.

It's a pity, though, that her serve seems to be more famous than her or any other aspect of her game

And despite what people say about her injuries or nerves preventing her from winning the French and US Open in 2004, I reckon Elena did more than enough (and surprised many others) by going so far in those tournaments. It's her serve that let her down. Nerves and injuries aren't really an excuse, since Elena managed to win her previous matches without showing any signs of them. Plus, she's 23 already - she should have been able to at least settle down most of her uncertainties at that age because we all know that tennis is a sport mostly for young people, especially on the women's side. I've said this many times before, but I'll say it again: Elena needs a good serve. Not an average one and certainly not a horrible one. It's the only way she'll ever win a Slam, a YEC title and achieve the coveted no.1 ranking.

If people don't love Lena, that's their problem, not hers.

Her fans know she's the best. And she knows her fans are the best. That's all that matters.
