Do you really believe Elena will work on her serve?

Elena had such a memorable tournament and for her to finish it off like that is

Anastacia won not only because she was mentally, the better player out there, but also because way before RG, she had worked on her weaknesses (i.e. the weak serve).

Elena's been saying that she'll work on her serve for a while. Now, after the RG final, she's saying that again. I don't know whether to believe her or not. And even if she does work on it now, I'm not sure whether she'll get another chance to reach a GS final.

Sorry about being blunt, but I'm really, really and Elena lost so badly, seeing as she really did have a chance to win a GS.

i reckon she'll work on it, she is already working on the ball toss but losing like this in a grand slam final opens up a players eyes to their weaknesses and usually that motivates them to work on them and improve them. but it is hard to change a serve mid season (let alone someone of elena's age however we saw justine do it a couple of seasons ago). when the season is over i think elena will work hard to change it with her coach.

Go the aussies! stosur!!!
and good luck russians: dementieva, safina, kirilenko, sharapova, kuznetsova, bovina, zvonareva, dushevina.

also good luck to: azarenka, lucic, sprem, vakulenko, vaidisova, safarova, ivanovic, groenefeld, mirza, krajicek, kvitkova, larcher de brito, lisicki.

Elena lost badly in a few matches that were partly thanks to her service game. I can still remember that 2 and 0 drubbing she got from Capriati back in the '01 Miami semis. Jenn was smacking big serves and using that power to minimise any chance of Elena breaking serve, and she was making big returns on Elena's serve.

It's just that no matter how good of a returner Elena is, and how awesome her groundstrokes are, there's always a chance that Elena won't be able to break serve as much as she'd like.

I really want Elena to become world no.1, GS champion some day, but it gets frustrating when she does get a chance to become that, it's the damn serve that breaks her down. It's like every step forward Elena makes, the serves brings her a couple of steps back.

Btw, I saw the interview on the RG site after the final, and she looked pretty beat up. I was for her, but I was hoping that maybe you're right, she's finally really woken up to the real importance of a solid serve and maybe start hard work to improve it.

Elena's got the coach and now, probably the experience to help improve on her nerves in big occassions, so I don't really see any real excuses for Elena to not work hard on her game now.

i think lena will work on her serve.. usually when asked about her serve she says it sucks but in a joking manner.. when asked today she said "i dont know how to serve" and started to cry..

well 2001 is 2001 that was years ago, it is now 2004 3 years on, i'm not debating that she has a bad serve im just saying she has been working on the ball toss (she hasnt changed the action i donot think but they are working on the ball toss). it does take time, as ive mentioned already it's vertially impossible to change a serve mid season and if that doesnt make it hard enough she isnt exactly at an age where it is easy to change a serve, it will take time even if she does work on it.

but it's hard to use it in da real competition...
v much pressure is on lena...
bcos' da damn media makes a big deal of lena's serve...
every1 asks lena about serve...
it's in lena's mind all da time...
me thinks afta this season...lena will do some serious work on it...
and then...we will see some surprise change on lena's serve...

I'm sure Elena will work on her serve and nerves big time.
The RG final was the last straw. 15,000 french crowd plus millions all over the world watching already saw what her main weakness is.

If we look at it in a positive light, if she managed to win RG with that serve, where is her motivation to improve it?
Right now , her motivation is 101% to get rid of that nasty serve.

I really hope she does, just imagine if she had a serve like Lindsay Davenport..

She would surely make many more finals, and should even capture a few titles

IMO, Elena is working hard on it. However, from now on, she will work harder than she did. It must have been such a nightmare for her to lose yesterday for a few more days, but she will be better. The result to get to the final is very positive for herself, Olga, and us. She shows everyone she is capable of winning a slam. She has to believe in herself and try to improve her game. I am sure she will be better and better. I always believe in her. Now her confidence is so low that she might have a bad serve for a while. However, with some nice wins, she will have more confidence. Mary Jo said for at least a couple of times that Elena's serve is not bad at all when she practices. It's all mental. She will get through this. She has to. She is a professional player. She also has good people around her. As soon as Elena's confidence is increased, she will be a much more consistent player. Nerves won't get to her, and she will be fine.

I think that she will, because I don't think that she's ever said straight out "I hate my serve" before. So I sense that she's finally realize that she needs to work on that or else, she's going to have the same results all the time.

I hope that Elena will improve her serve. But as you said northernlight, it will be hard. Since the time, she has her bad serve... Difficult to change it. But I think this final can be a trigger for changing her serve. For avoiding a match like the final.

me thinks...lena has improved it but can't put it in da match...
when lena played without any pressure...
lana serve is ok...
like in practice...it's ok...
olga also says lena needs more time...
they both need more time...
working on it 5-6 months "on tour" is v slow...
me thinks lena will do it seriously afta this season...

the loss in the final was really painful for her...and everybody knows that she's working on her serve, but you just can't change it, like in a few days...you need to spend time on it until it improves...
just give her some time, and you might see the results...
