Re: Team USA's Player of the Week for May 17th - Meghann Shaughnessy
Player of the Week for May 24 Goes to...
CoCo gets the POTW nod this week for run to the 50K Carson title. In the first round, CoCo beat Jennifer Elie 6-1 7-5 and then followed that up with a 5-7 6-3 6-0 win over Luzhanska. In the QFs, CoCo dismantled Qualifier Krista Hardebeck 6-3 6-1. In the SFs, CoCo then beat 7th seed Lindsay Lee-Waters, simply overpowering Lindsay 6-4 7-6(7). In the Final, CoCo proved to have too much game for Kristie Ahn with a 6-1 6-3 win to give CoCo the title. CoCo was able to win her first big title and in convincing form only losing one set the entire tournament. This bodes well for CoCo if she can keep up this consistent big game of her's. This great performance gives CoCo the POTW nod.
Venus and Serena Williams. Venus and Serena Williams get Honorable Mentions for this week for Serena making it to the second week of Roland Garros in both singles and doubles as the top seed in both events and Venus for finally getting past the 3rd round of singles. In singles, Serena beat Stefanie Voegele in the first round 7-6(2) 6-2. Then the second round saw Serena crush Julia Goerges 6-1 6-1. In the 3rd round, Serena would play 29th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Serena would ease her way through the first set 6-1 before errors crept in and Anastasia took full advantage to take the second 6-1. The third set saw Serena raise her level and take the 3rd 6-2 to make the 4th round. Venus Williams came into Roland Garros having not lost before the QFs at all this year in any event and as the second seed. In the first round, Venus beat her bitch Patty Schnyder 6-3 6-3. Venus then beat out Arantxa Parra Santonja 6-2 6-4. Venus then had to play 26th seed Dominika Cibulkova. Venus had lost to her before, 2008 Doha, so she came in knowing what to expect on Venus' worst surface. Venus was able to pick up the win 6-3 6-4 to set up a clash with Petrova. Petrova caused the upset though with a 6-4 6-3 win over Venus to knock her out of Roland Garros. The positives Venus can take is that she broke the Round 3 curse, having not made it past the 3rd round of Roland Garros since 2006. In doubles, Serena and sister Venus would go in as the heavy favorites to leave with the title. In the first round, they crushed Tanasugarn and Flipkens 6-0 6-1 and then received a walkover from Hantuchova/Wozniacki in the second round. In the third round, Venus and Serena then crushed 16th seeds, Hlavackova and Hradecka 6-1 6-2 to make the QFs.
Sloane Stephens for her run through Qualifying to the QFs of the 25K Grado. In Qualifying, Sloane was seeded 11th and got a 1st round bye. In the second round, Sloane defeated Mendo 6-2 6-1. In the Final round of Qualifying, Sloane beat 4th seed Vrljic 6-7(5) 6-3 6-1 to seal her place into the Main Draw, where she would play 2nd seed, Kristina Kucova. Sloane created the big upset in the first round by beating Kucova 6-4 7-5. She continued with another win, this time over fellow Qualifier Sekulic 6-2 6-2. Sloane's attempt at another Italian 25K final was ended by Jovanovic 7-6(8) 6-1 in the QFs. Still a great effort and week for Sloane.
Bethanie Mattek-Sands for her good efforts in both singles and doubles. Beth had to come to Paris early as she needed to go and compete in Qualifying and earn her way into the Main Draw. In Qualifying, Beth beat Alja Tomljanovic 6-0 6-7(5) 6-4 and then Elena Bovina 6-3 3-6 6-4. In the final round of Qualifying, Beth had to play the hot player, Simona Halep. Simona knocked Beth out 6-4 6-7(7) 6-4. Beth got in as a lucky loser though to take on Vania King, who she would then best 6-2 6-2. But once again she would have to play one of the hot players on tour, this time Shahar Peer, who recently made the SFs of Madrid. Beth would come out strong and take the first set 6-3, but from then on it was all Shahar as she cruised to a 3-6 6-0 6-1 victory. In doubles, Beth teamed up with Yan Zi. In the first round, they beat the team of Bacsinszky/Garbin 6-3 6-3 and then in the second round, they ousted the Italian team Errani/Vinci 6-4 7-5. But once more Beth found herself being eliminated by players in great form, this time Pennetta/Dulko, who were on a roll this clay season. Pennetta/Dulko won 7-6(7) 6-0 to make the QFs. In the Mixed Doubles, Beth and Mark Knowles were the 4th seeds, but got ousted by Garbin/Matkowski in the first round, 7-6(4) 6-1.
Lisa Raymond. Lisa Raymond and partner Rennae Stubbs came into the event gunning to win their first Roland Garros title and complete the Career Grand Slam together as a team. They started off well with a win over Rosolska/Shvedova, who earlier in the clay season took them to 3 sets, 7-6(4) 6-4. In the second round, Cornet and Rezai didn't have the game to stop them as Lisa/Rennae cruised to the 3rd round 6-2 6-2. In the 3rd round, they played the tough team of Radwanska/Kirilenko. During the match, Rennae took a dive and hurt her finger, which could have led to their downfall as they lost 7-6(6) 6-4. In the Mixed event, Lisa and Moodie got bounced in the first round to King/Kas 7-6(4) 6-3. So Lisa leaves Roland Garros before the second week even starts.
Liezel Huber. Liezel Huber kept her dreams of keeping the #1 rank alive with moving into the QFs of Roland Garros. Liezel teamed up with Anabel Medina Garrigues, 2 time defending champ, as the 3rd seeds. In the first round, they narrowly escaped Koryttseva/Kustova 2-6 6-1 6-4. In the second round, they had to play Azarenka/Zvonareva and once again narrowly escaped defeat this time with a 4-6 6-2 6-4 win. In the 3rd round, they drew 13th seeds Benesova/Zahlavova Strycova and for the third time they were able to fight to the victory with a 7-5 2-6 6-4 win to move into the QFs. By moving into the QFs, Liezel has kept her dreams of staying #1 and preventing the Williams Sisters from getting it for a little longer. In the Mixed Doubles, Liezel teamed up with Bhupathi to be the top seeds, but they got upset by Chan/Butorac 6-1 6-4 in the first round..
