She did play well, but it's the old, can't finish when she's ahead thing. Really needs to work on that. Otherwise, she played a good match.

Re: Melanie Oudin

Mel

61 winners but 57 unforced errors

Mel played a great match but needs to work on finishing a point or game a little more. She'll get there.

I think and hope today was a good sign of things to come. Aggressive counter punching from a really fit Mel is what shot her up the ranks when she was a teenager. Continue to work on the fitness and keep this game plan!

Re: Melanie Oudin

From what I read on twitter this was a good match from Mel, despite the loss. Definitely a very long one.

Her clay schedule will be pretty busy: Estoril, Madrid, Rome, Brussels, French Open.

Anna Chakvetadze
Agnieszka Radwanska Vera Zvonareva • Laura Robson • Donna Vekic Heather WatsonElina Svitolina Melanie Oudin • Andrea Petkovic

Re: Melanie Oudin

Here is what Mel had to say after he match(via WTA):

Quote:
"Whenever we play we always have tough matches," Oudin said. "Some people play better against a certain kind of game. I feel like normally whenever I play her, even today, it's a good match. I was definitely disappointed I didn't win, but I think this was the best match I've played so far this year."
I completely agree with her last statement. I feel playing more clay court events will help her. I'm glad she is finally playing Madrid and Rome and not the USTA 50k's. Hopefully she can do well in the warm-ups, and defend her R2 at Roland Garros!

I'm happy to see that she's keeping a positive frame of mind after the tough loss.

I'm also glad to see Mel head overseas to play the WTA warm ups .This is much better prep if she's serious about doing well at the French

Re: Melanie Oudin

Feel heartbroken for Mel : she worked so hard and played decent ball for sure against JJ, but it was her match to win.

On the other hand this was tough draw for 1st round with JJ in form. I worry about what Mel is going to do because this is time of year when she started getting her points and there is so much to defend and she is just not winning matches. I am so still surprised that she fell off the rails after that tournament win in Birmingham. I don't see her defending that, not with losses like she had this year, like getting a bagel in Osprey. I just wonder where it all went wrong because I want her to win and shut the haters up.

Good luck Mel. Tough tough fields ahead in Europe.

Re: Melanie Oudin

That match was interesting. Like you say, JJ's in pretty good form now, more of a high than a low, anyway. Mel's been slumping, well, since Birmingham. Still, it took "nine innings" for JJ to put Mel away, and that's with Mel giving her a lot help at the right moments.

On the high points, I haven't seen Mel play this kind of a match since 2010: good point construction, controlled aggression, mixing up spins, depth, power shots, and angles off both wings. And, her backhand and overhead shots are better now. JJ worked over Mel's backhand throughout the match, but it held up. I don't think it would have in 2010. So it seems we are starting to see the improvements she's been working on all this time. Had she been able to maintain focus and drive while she was ahead, she may well have won that match in 2 sets. She was in position to do so. But while she's a hell of a fighter from behind, she still gets lost as a front runner. Her coach pointed this out to her during one of the breaks, which is a good sign, means they're working on it. If she can build off this performance, things should be turning around for her pretty quick. I'm hopeful, actually.

Yes, those are all great comments and I saw it, too, but I didn't put too much faith in the performance of Melanie because she always played great against JJ and had never lost to her and JJ is such a head case to beginnwith, anything can happen. Even then, Mel had chances & blew them. I really believe she can have a Top 50 career for many years, but something is wrong "upstairs." Melanie has a great gritty game and just as a gritty terrier-type player, she could stay in the Top 50 for a long time. No, I don'tnthinkmshe will be Top 20, but she has talent for sure for Top 50. But Mel's game depends on "fight" and she brings "fight" to some matches (like against JJ, which is expected because she had a 2-0 record against a her) and then she brings no fight to really no-brainer matches : like Cabeza-Candela in a crap event like Osprey.

I believe in Mel and want her to not go down the path of so many American stars that just went totally nowhere. And yes she will fly way out of Top 100 if she doesn't defend Birimngham. WAY out.
