Well, I think I'll chalk the the bagel up to adjusting to the surface. I think Mel played a good match against Hlavackova; the last match I watched. Her game was ragged, with far too many mistakes, but she played an attacking style rather than lobbing sitters into the center of the court, then getting killed. While the errors drive me crazy, I would rather she do that, then spin forehands to the service line.
It was strange the way she collapsed after Birmingham. Part of it might have just been the let down after a breakthrough, which is pretty common in tennis. But I wonder if she hasn't been hiding from the journalist spotlight that was turned onto her again after Birmingham. I can't say, but the US summer run was quite a regression from her spring '12 form.
