Kayla Day

Kayla Day has been steadily climbing up the junior rankings to #1 in 2016.
2013, she was #11. 2014, she was #7. 2015, she was #4.

With Bellis and Swan getting most of the attention, Kayla made it to the spotlight during this year's US Open, after taking out Brengle in R1, before losing to Keys in R2. At Juniors, she took the singles title and made the finals in doubles. Kayla was first American to win junior Grand Slam since 2012, when Samantha Crawford won U.S. Open.

Overall, she's 38-17 this year, climbing to #271 while just turning 17 in September.
Although she hasn't made any announcement about turning pro, I would be surprised if she didn't follow into Bellis footsteps, especially as she's beaten her earlier this year at Naples 25k, where she made the finals. At New Haven, she defeated #31, Anastasija Sevastova to make the MD.

Her victory at the US Open helped pushed her to #1 at the ITF ranking.

Her coach, Henner Nehles, has worked with both Jelena Jankovic and Sam Querrey. He’s since begun working for the USTA, and currently trains a handful of 16-year-old girls.

Re: Kayla Day

Reigning U.S. Open juniors champion Kayla Day upset No. 1 seed Samantha Crawford in the Round of 16 at the W.L. Amos Sr. Tennis Classic on Thursday, prevailing 6-3. 6-2 at Mercer’s Leroy Peddy Tennis Center in the USTA Pro Circuit event.

Day rushed out to a quick lead. Using her left-handed serve and inside-out forehand, Day frustrated Crawford by disguising her shots and moving into the net. Crawford started connecting the second set, but Day started changing paces, forcing Crawford into even more errors.

Day, 17, is ranked No. 268 in the world.

The No. 2 seed, former UCLA player Jennifer Brady, was also knocked out, falling to two-time NCAA singles champion Danielle Rose Collins. The former Virginia player who came through the qualifying draw prevailed 7-5, 7-6 (2).

Ohio State’s Francesca Di Lorenzo also came up with a big victory Thursday, topping South Africa’s Chanel Simmonds 6-4, 6-2.

Defending singles champion Rebecca Peterson moved into the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Emina Bektas.

Also winning their Round of 16 matches: Jamie Loeb, Grace Min, Sesil Karatantcheva and Alize Lim.

Winning doubles matches were Sabrina Santamaria-Keri Wong, Michaella Krajicek-Taylor Townsend, Crawford-Melanie Oudin and Loeb-Kristie Ahn.

Friday’s play begins at 10 a.m., with Min taking on Loeb and Day taking on Karatantcheva. Those matches will be followed by the other quarterfinals, with Lim taking on Peterson and Di Lorenzo taking on Collins. Rounding out the day will be the doubles semifinals: Crawford-Oudin vs. Santamaria-Wong and Krajicek-Townsend vs. Ahn-Loeb.

Re: Kayla Day

Kayla had an unexpected long match today, but managed to hold on to win against Sesil KARATANTCHEVA in 3 sets!!! She's off to the SF's in only her 2nd career 50k tournament (1st being last month, losing in R1 after qualifying as LL...)

Kayla won the first set in 24 minutes, 6-0.
She was leading the 2nd set 4-0, then Sesil mounted a comeback to take the 2nd set 6-7(5). Kayla took the 3rd and deciding 7-6(4), but not after spending 3 hours and 2 minutes on the court!!!!

Next she will face-off against #4 Grace Min, who defeated Jamie Loeb in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

Kayla still hasn't announced whether she's turning pro.
When she was told to list her goals by her tennis coach at the age of 7, she had some high expectations of herself.

Ironically, she has is on track having achieved these goals, year by year, and added more accomplishments to that list (#1 in girls 18 and winning Junior US Open).

Next on the list is to win Junior Wimbledon, which she made it to SF's at age 16 this year, so she might want to hold back on turning pro in order to win Wimbledon next year at age 17.

When her name was plastered in the media after winning Junior US Open, some comments were made that the media is repeating past mistakes by putting too much pressure on the youngster.

However, I have to wonder if she is even fazed by such a challenge, given her goal of being #1 from age 20 to 32.

Re: Kayla Day

Kayla Day wins her SF match against Grace Min, 6-2, 7-5!!!

Plays Danielle Collins in the finals...which although I am pulling for Kayla, I respect Danielle's game and have to believe she will give Kayla a very tough challenge, especially after losing only 2 games to defending champion Rebecca Peterson!

Kayla is a tough competitor, strong serve and lefty forehand usually gives her an edge. Danielle takes so much time away, hitting low groundies, side to side, I just can't see Kayla winning those points as she doesn't have alot of speed at the baseline. I suspect Kayla will attempt to find someway to mix up her game to get Danielle's timing off, which may be enough for her to come in on some short balls and blast it wide to Danielle's backhand. I hope it will be a good match.

Does anybody have the link to the live stream?

I see potential in her. Strong serve. Good rest of game

Kayla reminds me of a Kvitova with topspin

In addition, I believe she's still young, physically, where more fitness development will add to her game. She disguises her forehand very well, so when she goes wide right, it's very tough to return.

Although Bellis is still the top American prospect, I believe Kayla has a higher upside, as she has more power and her serve is a much stronger weapon than Bellis'.
