Emina Bektas

I think it's about time Emina gets her own thread.

She's a former standout at the University of Michigan and ended her career there with the all time most singles wins and combined wins in singles and doubles.

While she was in school she won a $10k singles title and 1 doubles title. Since starting on tour "full time" this year she has won 1 singles title (1 other final) and 5 doubles titles (2 other finals). Her 5 doubles titles have all come with different partners.

She will reach a career high in both singles and doubles next week.

She will be around ~#665 in singles and ~#310 in doubles next week.

I really think bigger things are in store for her.

Of course

The 10k in Mexico City this weekend was streamed from the QF onwards so it was really fun to watch some of her matches. I've seen her play when she was in college and she has only gotten better since then. She has a HUGE serve. She also has a great FH and likes to run around her BH. Some of her opponents picked on her BH whenever they could but I will say that her BH has improved a lot. She's more solid off of it and can redirect it well up the line or cross court. Her volleying skills are also really really good.

I don't remember her ace count in her first two matches of the week but in the QF onwards it was:

QF: 16 aces
SF: 13 aces (including ace on MP)
F: 4 aces

She's had some really close singles losses this year against good opponents:

3s loss to Bouzkova (former top 10 junior and current top 300 player)
3s loss to Dart (top 400 player)
3s loss to Burnett (top 300 player at the time and former top 125)

Her best wins this year include:

Carol Zhao (top 400 and Stanford #1)
Marcela Zacarias (former top 200)
Victoria Rodriguez (top 400)
Francesca Di Lorenzo (OSU standout, won a 25k singles title this year)
Gilchrist (top 400)
Savinykh (former top 100)

Re: Emina Bektas

Yeah, she had the biggest service in college tennis IMO. Glad she's having success! Love when she shouts "'mon" instead of "c'mon." She was so fun to watch and is a good twitter follow. Someone I'm cheering for, even as a Buckeye

Thanks for tagging me Cory.

I've been following her results on tour lately. It's always great to see pro success for players coming out of college.

Re: Emina Bektas

Emina back in action this week in 50k Macon

Another good quality win for Emina - reaches Macon 50k QFR with a QR2 win over #3 seed Marand 4-6, 6-2, 6-3

Unfortunately, she'll play fellow U of M Alum Ronit Yurovsky in FQR

Both have been having good results this summer. Ronit has only lost 6 games in her last two matches so a little unsure of what to expect tomorrow for their match.

Doubles MD has yet to be released but I really hope Emina got in the draw.. Either on her own ranking or if not, then hope she was granted a WC on her merit this year of winning 5 doubles events.

Emina Nice win. Hate that she now has to play Ronit, but hopefully she can pull it out

Emina won 6-3, 7-5!

Feel for Ronit who also seems to be in good form but happy for Emina to qualify for her first 50k in her first try.

Potential spots against:

(WC)Wacnik
(3)Peterson
Robin Anderson
(2)Brady

So 50/50 chance of having a decent R1

But even if she draws Wacnik or Robin, her R2 opponent would be (3)Peterson or (2)Brady, respectively.. assuming both the seeds win.

Re: Emina Bektas

(LL)Ronit Yurovsky (USA) vs. Ellie Halbauer (USA)
(Q)Emina Bektas (USA) vs. (WC)Jessica Wacnik (USA)

Ronit got the LL spot anyway

Emina gets the better R1 draw between the two but Ronit gets the overall better draw to the QF. If Ronit gets past Ellie then she would play either Sesil/Myrtlle Georges

Emina will likely play defending champion, Rebecca Peterson in R2. Would be great experience though! Excited for the MDs to get under way!
