Help Save Aceland's Tennis Site - Only $30!

I know a lot of us check in on this site, and its a great source for keeping up with the local tennis scene, but this website will soon close down soon unless it gets more subscribers!

A 1 month subscription is $8, a 6 month subscription is only $30, and only about another 450 subscribers are needed to secure the website through to next year.

So sign up and subscribe people, if you want to keep getting the latest Aussie tennis news

Re: Help Save Aceland's Tennis Site - Only $30!

Journalism is so difficult now, all major news websites are feeling the squeeze with the introduction of so many free websites. It would be nigh impossible for a specialist website like Aceland to survive (or to pay it's way with a full-time dedicated staff member) I would think in this environment. Such a pity.

Though he makes a case against TA for their cursory pieces on the APT tournaments I think another aspect would be that many of the tournaments seem to have live stream now. Parents, family, fans of players can now watch many of the matches and not have to rely on reports/websites for match information.

There's more to life than just being happy.

If I knew Aceland was about to pull the pin due to lack of funds I would have absolutely signed up for membership or given a significant donation for his services. This is very sad to see. What a legend he is.

^ Or stuff like, give $100 per year and meet your ITF favourite player, follow Aceland on tournament for a day, that kind of thing.

Watching a stream with no commentary is no substitute for a well written article afterwards especially with quotes from the players and other insights you wouldn't know otherwise.

It's ludicrous that a phone call supersedes any journo that is actually taking the time to specifically be there and talk to the players. If players have realised that and snubbed TA, then no wonder MM found the environment hostile if those that are in power don't wish for any sort of "competition".

Re: Help Save Aceland's Tennis Site - Only $30!

I think it is a disappointment that Aceland is going away. I did subscribe and thought it was worth every cent of my $30. I certainly learnt far more from Marc than I did from the rubbish that TA throw out. To me it shows everything that is wrong with the world today. TF probably makes a fortune while not putting out quality content whereas Aceland who consistently put out decent output struggles.

Agree but for some people less passionate about Australian tennis overall like us, say a parent or family member who follow a particular Aussie player but no one else, it may be a substitute for them.

I think it's protocol for the chief funding body to have first dibs on an interview even if it's via phone or Skype of whatever. Each player is required to do the post-match official tournament media (definitely for WTA and I assume the same for ITF) if they are requested to do so, so there's probably not much that can be done about that I'd expect because of this protocol TA would have first dibs on any interview.

The problem I have is TA's would be their reluctance to provide some $ towards the website out of the fear of Aceland saying something controversial about them. Or if they did, he would have to sign a contract saying he couldn't criticise them. Dictators!

He was most active(useful) in covering ITF/challenger but the problem is the general tennis fans do not care about those.

Re: Help Save Aceland's Tennis Site - Only $30!

I think if if Aceland was able to stick around longer, he'd get bigger and bigger stories because they players he's covering and getting to know now will be at higher levels in a few years - see e.g. his comments on Dane Propoggia and also being able to interview Lleyton recently. His reporting would've been able to move into bigger leagues as players progress and his reputation grew.

As for TA getting first dibs, I think part of Marc's grievance is that if it wasn't for him covering the ProTour, TA would never have been interested in interviewing those players anyway. So he laid the foundation for that, but then was shafted. That's how I read it anyway.

Anyway... he's calling it an indefinite break. Maybe he'll be able to come up with a viable model. Now I'm just crossing fingers that TWO indefinite breaks will be over someday: Ash Barty and Aceland Tennis! Haha.

I am not suited to Forum life.

Yeah I thought of Barty straight away too, re "indefinite break"

I'm a subscriber and sad to see it go this way. Would love to have it come back in some capacity, even if it's just a few special stories here and there.
