French Open 2014

Red dirt season is here so let's start the always controversial FOWC discussion

Edit: Speculation over - Barty is in Strasbourg qualies…. i'm gonna take a stab in the dark and say she's got it, probably wouldn't be playing that if she were playing FO qualies. Has Ashleigh been injured or just not playing for no reason again?

I think we can scrub Storm and Jarka off the list as they are playing in Japan on artificial grass the next few weeks

I'm not going to comment on the RG WC discussion lest I burst an artery. You all know my position on this.

Re: French Open 2014

Yep the Barty Party continues I think. Not that I would want Liv to receive one either. She'll get benefit slogging it out in the quallies too.

I actually think these reciprocal swap deals have ran their race. The USA have a glut of players to choose so it probably suits them. However us, and France, who handed their AO one to the veteran Parmentier this year, just keep going to the same well.

I'd prefer Gadjosova to get it over anyone. Practically two full years off the tour, maybe she needs a helping hand to get back on track.

Or just give it back, or just ask for a couple of quallie ones in return, or just plain make it a playoff for the thing.

There's more to life than just being happy.

Re: French Open 2014

I am with Garry here. Jarka would get my vote. Failing that the play off thingo...Barty, Rogowska, Gajdosova and Sanders.

Yeah Jarka deserves to be thrown a bone at this point I think. However, yes I think the whole thing should just get scrapped, it's stupid.

Re: French Open 2014

Surely not Barty again!!! A now 18yo part-timer who hasn't moved up the ranking in two years?? No way should she be a shoe-in. Man, I'd even prefer Nastya over her - a previous 3R finisher at the FO who's top 20 doubles and former top 100 player. Probably a better choice than Parmentier was for the AO.

But I'd love Jarka to get it, especially after this week's effort.

Re: French Open 2014

Barty has 200(!!!!!) points on her ranking that, quite frankly, she doesn't deserve. Imagine if there was no WC exchange. She wouldn't even be top 300.
Unless she qualified for them herself, and won a round of course...

Re: French Open 2014

All the handouts for Barty are ridiculous.

#KeepTennisClean #LockHerUp #IStandWithWADA

And we'll never be royals (royals). It don't run in our blood, That kind of luxe just ain't for us. We crave a different kind of buzz.

Re: French Open 2014

I was shocked to see she only has 10 tournaments to her name. People saying on her 18th birthday how great it is that she is now eligible to play more tournaments, but I don't think she has ever hit the maximum target she's allowed to play anyway.

I understand she is injured now, so I'll cut her some slack there, but honestly she's never scheduled a good string of tournaments together, instead opting for about a million 'training blocks' and disappearing for weeks, only to resurface with a friggin WC gift. Meanwhile, her contemporaries are winning WTA tournaments (Vekic) and cracking the top 100 without the assistance of wildcards (Bencic), and...you know, actually playing tournaments.

Take away her RG and US Open points from last year and she'd be ranked 325

The most frustrating part of all this is that the girl can play tennis and has been blessed with real talent. She can actually qualify on her own merit. Let her!

...I said I wasn't going to comment, but obviously that didn't last. Clearly this is my favourite topic to rant about

Warranted rant. She seems like a nice talented girl but I hate the way she's going about her career. It's like she already thinks she's too good to get out there & grind like everyone else. Ugh.

Re: French Open 2014

100% agree with everything TS said. I am a fan of Ashleigh and am sure she will get 'there' eventually but the amount of tournaments she's played over the course of her career is staggeringly low. I'm not sure what her team are thinking, but yeah I assume they've become complacent given the fact that she's going to receive wildcards at the drop of a hat and doesn't need to really grind her way through challengers and qualifying. It's somewhat understandable the way they think given how Tennis Australia have been gifting her for years, but something will need to change...

Give it to Jarka or if not her Olivia. Anyone but Ashleigh please.

I actually don't mind that she's a part time player. Enjoying the sport is more important than playing week in week out for ranking points and I think Ash definitely plays best when she's relaxed and having fun.

But I do think that she doesn't deserve more WCs with that approach.
