French wildcard for Evie

Evie Dominikovic will be awarded the French Open wildcard if she fails to make the main draw, Tennis Australia's Head of Women's Tennis Dr Janet Young announced today. Evie, currently ranked 104, is trying to build her ranking playing WTA qualifying events. "Evie is a worthy recipient in light of her outstanding results at the Australian Open, current form and solid third round performance at last year's French Open," Dr Young said. "While it is possible Evie will get into the singles main draw in her own right, she is assured of a place should she need it. Evie is capable of doing extremely well on clay and is no doubt looking forward to the French Open."

If Dominikovic gets direct entrance to the French Open, the wildcard will go to Christina Wheeler, who last year made the most of her main draw berth by upsetting Anna Kournikova in the first round. Two wildcards will go to Australian women at Wimbledon under a reciprocal arrangement, one for the main draw and the other into qualifying. These will be announced closer to the time.

Congrats to Evie

I have a feeling she will probably sneak into the maindraw, but I do think she is deserving if she does miss out on it.

However, I don't really think Wheeler should be the next one in. Stosur is clearly the player in form, and I think that she should be merited for that. Wheeler just hasn't been in very good form lately, and although I can understand wanting to give her a shot at defending her points from last year, I have a hard time seeing her win a match in the maindraw again this year unless she can really turn things around soon or get a very lucky draw.

Maybe they just want to give as many different players a shot at a slam since they have the RG and the Wimbledon wildcard to deal out...Stosur would be a better candidate for Wimbledon anyway, so hopefully she will get that one

But he loves you."

I'm happy with that But I also think Evie may just sneak in and wont require it...

Samantha Stosur would be the next logical choice after Evie cos of her ranking and good form, but I think they will give her the Wimbledon WC and obviously with WC restrictions can't give her the RG one as well (well that's my interpretation)...so therefore Wheeler is the next best thing She has been in poor form lately, but that's largely due to a foot injury which I fear hasn't healed 100% Anyway, if Evie does sneak in, then I wish Christina all the best in the MD!

Stosur has also never played at French Open qualies where as Wheeler has had a lot of success at Roland Garros reaching the final round of qualies and also doin well there as a junior!

Randy, Christina has had a lot of naglging foot injuries of late, she managed to play well at the Aust Open, I think her form is ok, clay is her best surface!!!!!

I can understand them giving Evie the wildcard, though I do hope she qualifies on her own merit.

As for Christine Wheeler being next in line, not really sure on that, as she doesn't seem to do well anywhere. I haven't seen any indication that if she is given a wildcard to every tournament that she is likely to make a breakthrough.

Overall I have no argument with what they are doing, as there is no-one that is an obvious choice to receive the wildcard on recent form.

I would prefer a play-off over even a round robin between 3 or 4 players. It could only be beneficial for all the girls to get some match practice on clay and pressure battling against teammates.... for either the maindraw or quallies.

I hope Christina's foot is OK. I wouldn't want the w/c promised to her if it's not 100%.

There's more to life than just being happy.

I also like the playoff idea.

It gives the girls a chance to see who is the best in form, and also knowing what is up for grabs, the player who wants it most and can handle that pressure, hopefully will be the best to handle the pressure situation of performing well at a slam.

Christina is a good player, and I happen to like her. However, I don't think she is in good form right now, and although that is probably due to the injury problems, it is still the current situations. If Christina was 100% healthy and was coming up with better results, then I would certainly say that she was worthy of being next in, but at this point I am not confident in that decision.

Anyway, it is Tennis Australia's decision, and I hope that Christina will be able to get the wildcard and find some inspiration in trying to get back to the form she is capable of producing
