The Juniors

A thread for the various young kids that have showed some promise in the recent past and hold high hopes for the future (yeah OK, we've been saying that for over 15 years )

Anyway, talk about any of them you like! Obviously the 18 and unders...led by Sam Stosur who is top 200, all the way down to 14 year Olivia Lukaszewciz who has just recently gotten a ranking in the 800's.

Which of the girls do you think has the most promise?

Lots of them to choose from...Casey Dellacqua, Adriana Szili, Gaby Baker, Lauren Cheung, Tiffany Welford, Olivia Lukaszewicz, Sophie Ferguson, Daniela Dominikovic, Lara Picone, Natalie Tanevska, Darya Ivanov, Dubravka Cupac....etc etc (I've probably forgotten a few, typical!)

Yeah I know Szili is playing like me at the moment, but I still say give her time...anyway, *hopefully* most of these girls can do something. A lot of them have little experience so it's going to be a waiting game, but that's half the fun Dissecting their game and criticising their mistakes

Out of those I mentioned, Casey is on her way as we speak, closing in on the top 300. Out of the younger ones I was really impressed with Daniela's game (minus the stupid errors) and think she'll end up doing better than both Olivia and Sophie, players she grew up with in juniors...most will struggle in today's power dominated game, but I can see a few of them making some inroads down the track...

Anyway, keep this thread going and we'll discuss the kids of Oz tennis

from what i have heard everyone believes that szili is the future of aussie tennis. everyone says she is so talented. i've only seen her play once and that was at the australian open this year. i have to say i did see some talent but not really anything to get excited about, i mean i don't thik she'll reach top 20.

i also saw Casey Dellacqua at the oz open and she looked solid. she had nice shots. she needs to work on the speed and footwork. but she got a wild card so someone thinks she is talented.

Lauren Cheung has a pretty big serve. i haven't seen her play but these days a good serve is vital and it is one of the hardest things to fix so if she can develop the rest of her game she could be ok.

Tiffany Welford has a really big serve which gets into the 170kph. i haven't seen her play and she hasn't really done anything.

Olivia Lukaszewicz and Sophie Ferguson keep getting good things said about them so they are ones to watch.

Daniela Dominikovic i see as being a pretty big talent. possibly top 50. she is inconsistent in terms of errors. she has been described as a young evie but is more aggressive and i think she is expected to have a bigger game. not a bad description considering the size of evie's serve.

sam stosur imo is the most promising. she has a big serve and great placement. she's quickish (not the quickest but not the slowest) she has good power on her groundies and she can volley and with that serve should be able to serve and volley. her groundies are inconsistent. some can be pin point accurate with huge power while others can be halfway down the net. imo she looks like a quicker molik with better groundies.

I was impressed with Sophie Ferguson when I saw her play at Oz Open. Not because she had any startling strokes. Her game reminded me of Bryanne Stewarts when she was a junior. One handed backhand, fluid groundies... (tho Bryanne's strokes have sooo stiffened up nowadays errrkk )
What I like was that when Sophie lost a few bad points she made a conscious effort to tighten up and not miss anything. What annoyed me with the likes of Olivia, Gaby and Daniella was that they smacked the ball around with no intensity, if they made errors it was like 'so what'. You need to develop intensity during juniors, it won't happen afterwards!

I would appreciate if anyone could give me a run-down on the style of play and opinion of any junior they have seen, particularly Cupac, Ivanov, Giltnan, Cheung, Welford and others. Thanks in advance.

OK from what I've seen...

Cupac - Saw her play a little bit of juniors at last years AO, and from what I remember she has a solid baseline game and hits pretty hard. Seemed a little inconsistent and I imagine she has improved somewhat...

Ivanov - Petite and not very powerful. But she gets everything back and is very solid from the back. Unfortunately I think she might struggle more than the others due to her size and the fact she doesn't relly have a weapon, but hey look at Breadmore

Giltinan - I didnt like what I saw, has a terrible serve and a bad forehand (awakward motion, a little like Rosenfield did) but maybe she just had a bad day? She can hit hard and I can definately see lots of room for improvement. But definately needs to work on technique.

Cheung - Nice game and good strokes/serve, has some power on her but I felt isn't aggressive enough. Will definately improve, and I think she is 19 now (or close to it) so she's the oldest of the 'bunch'. Another fairly little player but good build.

Welford - Pretty good hitter and server from what I remember. Really should have beaten Beigbeder (or at least the first set), but I just feel she lacks a killer instinct. Might get lost in the pack, but certainly capable of doing much better in the future.

I should mention Natalie Tanevska. She impressed me at the Aussie Assault. Hits hard, seems pretty determined and is coached by her dad (uh-oh )...I can see a good future for her, but I definately think she should have done better in juniors by now.

Daniella - effortless power on her groundies, but mediocre serve and needs to improve movement (not fitness). Plenty of talent and can make top 100.

Olivia - like playing against a brick wall, literally. A bit too defensive, but will get power as she grows. She has a great return of serve and was doing well against Evie's in a practice i saw.

Lauren - only saw a bit but from what i saw she moved v.well, had a nice serve and adequate power but was error prone in one of the sets (understandable as it was a tier 2).

Nathalie - similar style to Olivia but can flatten it out and hit hard. Like Olivia needs to get stronger, but moves/anticipates well and has good court sense.

Good luck to the Aussie and Balkan girls!

ouch! Don't recognise any names as I don't know many under 14's, but in fairness some of the matches were tight (and yes some were floggings) hehe

The Aussies performed better last year I think, in this event?

Casey Dellacqua has signed up to the $10k event in Felixstowe, England, which immediately follows Wimbledon. She played Roehampton junior event last year, and I presume she will play that and junior Wimbledon again this year. Felixstowe is a tournament that has always been popular with the Australian players, featuring Horiatopoulos, Stone, Summerside, Sewell and McKee last year (when it was a $25k)

I think that behind stosur, dellacqua is the best chance of being top 100, but that could be biased due to the fact i am a west aussie who has been hanging out for some talent since the dissapointing early retirement of potential top 50, siobhan drake brockman, and it doesnt look like nicky sewell will get there in singles (but definately will in doubles).

Casey hits the ball hard and is a left hander which she uses very well to her advantage. Her problems are her foot work, which when i talked to her in perth a few months ago she said was one of the things she would work on this year with her ais scholarship.

Casey hates travelling, she has a very close family and finds it difficult to be away from them so hopefully ais and tennis oz will give her plenty of support and she can overcome this beacuse she will need to if she is to become a top player.

Ozfan44 votes 1 Casey Dellacqua

bp - Why did Felixstowe get downgraded Christina H reached the SF last year, I remember that very well

ozfan - I think Casey has loads of potential too! It doesn't take blind freddy to see that the kid has a little extra than most of her Aussie contemporaries...definately will be WA's finest export soon I hope she can sort out her travel issues...it's tough on young kids and I fully understand, but if she wants to be a major player one day she's going to have to move on (and Im sure she is aware of this )

If Casey plays her cards right she might just get the Wimbledon qualifying wildcard too...

Wasn't she injured lately?? Is that why she missed the Victorian 10K events??

Hopefully Casey does sort out her travel issues. I did hear that Melissa Dowse had the same trouble two years back. Hopefully tennis Aus can provide some support if it's a real issue.

I was disappointed that some of the juniors like Sophie, Olivia, Daniella didn't front up for the 10K's. Any reason??? It's not like they're too good for them when you're ranked around 800!!

Yeah she had an arm injury from memory...also Tiffany Welford was injured and missed them too

As for the younger ones, Daniella and Olivia were playing Junior Grade 1 events in Asia, and fared OK. No idea about Sophie...she entered Yarrawonga but withdrew, perhaps an injury? I fully expect Sophie and Daniella to play all 6 Aussie challengers at the end of the year (Olivia obviously cant cos of age), then we'll get a beter indication of where they are at, as I imagine they'll play mostly junior events this year.

TS - several challengers in the UK have been downgraded or cancelled this year. There was a 10k at Frinton straight after Felixstowe, but that has now been cancelled. Hatfield $10k has also been cancelled. The LTA don't seem to understand the logic of having a series of challengers, where foreign players are more likely to come to Britain for.

I think fewer Australian players will come to Britain this year, due to this situation.

The LTA seem to want to keep all the money from Wimbledon and put very little back into the game.

casey has had a sore arm and elbow no idea when she will make her comeback and as far as the wimbledon qualies wildcard i think she most deserves it and tennis oz are seriously troubled if they give it to anyone else
