Why didn't you just say "all Asians look the same"

Re: December Showdown & 2013 Summer Events

It's good to see more Asian Australian players coming through though. They'll give the -ic girls a run for their money

Seriously though, it's so interesting to see how few Anglo Aussies there are amongs our juniors and seniors. Our top ranked players are from such diverse backgrounds: Poland, Russia, Slovakia, NZ, Indigenous, Italian, Balkan countries. Our only top players with Anglo names are Peers, Moore and Jones (who is a newer Aussie than all the others anyway). And some of our best young juniors have Asian heritage: Cabrera, Hon, Tjandramulia, Bains. Pretty cool that our tennis players are reflecting to the world how diverse the Australian population is

Re: December Showdown & 2013 Summer Events

what heritage is Tjandramulia? Indonesian?

At first I thought it was an Aboriginal name

Re: December Showdown & 2013 Summer Events

The sport is still dominated by those of Anglo-origin. Interestingly, the national entry lists really reflect our population distribution. Dominated by Anglo, then followed by Asian/Balkan names. The other names are then distributed between Italian, Greek, Russian, German, Latin, Pacific, Polish and then every now and again, Dutch, Middle Eastern and Indigenous.

I think the trend used to be moreso Anglo, Italian/Greek
Now it's more Anglo, Balkan/Asian (particularly Chinese)
I think it'll go towards more Anglo, Middle Eastern/Asian (Chinese and more Indian)

I thought the trend would show the number of Anglo numbers go down as I went down in age groups, but it stayed fairly stable.

And yes, quite bored in my holidays

And yes, Tjandramulia is an Indonesian name.

Re: December Showdown & 2013 Summer Events

So Pits, Inglis, Bollweg, Huang (98'), Mendez, Hule (99'), Aiava, Ruffels (00') round out the quarter finals of under 14s.

Impressed by Priscilla Hon. To make QF at 14 is very encouraging. Ditto Cabrera, who I think just turned 15? Well done to both

Re: December Showdown & 2013 Summer Events

Abbie Myers coming down with the flu I read in her TA interview, hopefully she can shake that off.

Really hope Inglis can take out the 14s, she has busted her backside this year training so would love to see it all pay off for her....added to the fact she is a fellow west aussie :P

Good luck to the West Aussies in 2013!:
Casey Dellacqua Jessica Moore Bojana Bobusic Storm Sanders
as well as Jelena Dokic Sam Stosur Sally Peers Ash Barty Olivia Rogowska Monique Adamczak Sacha Jones Rodionova Sisters Tammi Patterson Vicky Rajicic Azra Hadzic Alison Bai

And all the other aussie girls

Love this quote from Abbie

"“I just love the game. I love the competition out there. I love getting pumped up and getting into the other girl’s face. I just love it.”

Do we have a little hothead on our hands here?

Lets hope so, would love to see a few more of our other youngsters fire up a bit more!!
As long as they don't tip over the edge into Rodionova territory...

Yeah! Most of our girls are a bit too timid/shy on court I reckon. A lot of less talented players get wins simply by having a bit of tude and pumping themselves up.

Re: December Showdown & 2013 Summer Events

Quote: QFs: Hon v Hives, Cabrera v Myers, Woolcock v Keir, Hadzic v Sanders.

Best guess- Hon, Cabrera, Woolcock, and whoever doesn't choke in the last pair, who have had mixed form lately. Aussie battler vs TA favourite. Hadzic until recently was the most consistent, though a "pattern" player and can be predictable, eg wide serve setup followed by side to side tram line alternate, to set up or force errors. Usually consistent temperament so can execute over and over. Sanders battled injury during the year, lefty but doesn't seem to have the coupled heqvy plus curvy side or out spin like others I've seen on tour (Kvitova, Safarova), and to capitalise on that as a major weapon. Could be kinda flat but not too sure as have not seen enough times? Can anyone confirm? Needs development either way. Perhaps limited by height, but seems to work hard. Hopefully a good match either way, good luck girls!
