Re: Aus Championships since 1990

thanks guys... the drama hasn't finished (ooppss jack snuck in before me!)

[1] Samantha Stosur (4) v. Siobhan Drake-Brockman (107) 6-1 2-1
Sam holds as she unleashes a 2nd serve kicker that bounces over the 5 foot nothing head of SBD.
(WC) Bojana Bobusic (230) v. Jenny Byrne (75) 5-5

[8] Casey Dellacqua (39) v. Cindy Watson (131) 6-4
Bryanne Stewart (135) v. Olivia Rogowska (132) 5-5
Bryanne loses concentration to lose the lead in the first. A text msg has come through at 30-40 and Bryanne has become a little flustered that it was from Sam Stosur not agreeing to re-ignite their old doubles partnership.

(WC) Trudi Musgrave (239) v. Annabelle Ellwood (57) 3-6 1-0
[4] Nicole Bradtke (24) v. Evie Dominikovic (64) 3-6 1-0
Bradtke is glaring at everyone and contemplating having a tantrum ala her class classic racquet slamming and crying against Judith Weisner in the 1990 QLD open. She’s down 00-40 on serve after dropping the first but Evie, beats her to the punch (with a string of obscenities that John McEnore would be proud of) by pushing 5 double-hand backhands in a row into the net.

[5] Jarmila Gajdosova (25) v. Monique Adamczak (138) 0-6 2-2
Monique has a point for 3-1 but fluffs an overhead and then double faults twice to give Jarka her 2nd game. Before the scoreboard has ticked over, Jarka has jumped on twitter to tell the world ’despite the pressure from EVERYONE I’ve won my first and NOW my 2nd game!
Anastasia Rodionova (62) v. Lisa McShea (139) 3-6 1-0
The agro is continuing in this match. A-Rod holds serve and gives Lisa a mouthful in Russian whilst changing ends ‘you’ve never won anything and never will!’. Svetlana Kuznetsova (at this tournament to help her best mate Alicia Molik practice and hopefully see her arch enemy A-Rod lose) rushes down from the stands and translates for Lisa. Lisa retorts after the sit down ‘Ive won 50 ITF doubles titles you crazy B!tch... beat that!’.

(WC) Christina Wheeler (147) v. Louise Field (96) 6-3 0-1
[3] Alicia Molik (8) v. Kristin Godridge (79) 6-2 2-0
6 foot Alicia ‘Im friends with everyone’ Molik pats 4 foot nothing Kristin Godridge on the head during a change of ends. Kristin is tempted to tell Alicia to p!ss off but realises she’s playing everyone’s best friend, and smiles back. Kristin is hoping that a 1R loss covers her airfare back to Hong Kong.

[7] Nicole Pratt (35) v. Jo-Anne Faull (61) 6-3 1-0
Joanne sighs after losing the first set 6-3. She longs for the days when she used to beat up on little Nicole Pratt 6-0 6-0 in those Aussie junior tournies.
Jessica Moore (132) v. Kerry-Anne Guse (60) 2-6 1-1

Sally Peers (145) v. Kristine Radford-Kunce (45) 3-6 1-0
On the slow hardcourt Kristine continues to serve and volley (trying to channel her glory days of out serving and volleying Martina Navratilova at Birmingham one year) and promptly gets passed by Sally Peers four times to lose serve.
[6] Rachel Mcquillan (28) v. Sophie Ferguson (109) 6-1 2-1

Michelle Jaggard-Lai (83) v. Rennae Stubbs (64) 2-6 0-2
Rennae crunches one of MJL double-hand backhand slice lobs to the open court. She is playing superb tennis apart from the two games she lost in which she couldn’t come to terms with that the ball CAN’T land in the tram lines in singles. Rennae contemplates tanking the singles to keep fit for her crucial doubles encounter with Sam Stosur against the doubles stalwarts of Pleming and Barclay.
[2] Jelena Dokic (4) v. Isabella Holland (179) 6-2 2-0

There's more to life than just being happy.

Re: Aus Championships since 1990

I remember Jo-Ann Faull had a pretty good Slam season in 89(?) or something like that. Didn't she reach two Slam round of 16's that year? That girl had some potential, what happened to her?

Re: Aus Championships since 1990

This commentary And yes Evie WOULD have mouthed "f*@k you" I used to catch her doing it all the time! She was my favourite at the time but was SO frustrating to watch one of the worst chokers I've ever seen, she would play lights out tennis that was top 20 worthy and then get in to a winning position and either push everything down the middle of the court or dump every single shot in to the net. I still have her match where she nearly beat Venus at the French on VHS

Pity Lauren didn't make the cut... amatch between her an A-Rod would've been a cracker..... well maybe not the actual tennis.

Yes in 89 she was in the 4R in both the French (lost to a 15 y/o Seles) and Wimbledon (one the 1st set in her 4R match but only won one game after). Maybe it was too much too soon, but was troubled by a back injury for a while and then just couldn't make it back to the top 100 (was a perennial 160 ranker). Her and McQuillan were going to be our next big things in the 90's...

Re: Aus Championships since 1990

Funny how we had a lot of unheralded girls in the late 80s/early 90s reaching the lower end of the top 100 (players like Jaggard, Field, Faull, Godridge), yet they largely remained unnoticed. These days it's like we get out the red carpet if one of our players comes close to the top 100. Maybe the competition is much tougher these days? Or maybe it's because the internet didn't exist back then (i.e. a forum for tragics like us) and the media largely left those players alone?

In Jo-An Faull's case, to reach two Slam 16's in a row at the age of 18 is quite simply a remarkable achievement. Yet there seemed to be little fuss or fanfare about her...in fact a google search won't get you much Also, I remember Jenny Byrne (hardly a household name in tennis) made the Indian Wells final one year too. Granted, it wasn't as big a tournament as it is now, but it was still a big tournament. Kerry-Anne Guse did well to make top 60 in the mid-late 90s, but she also slipped under the radar somewhat. Annabel Ellwood was our top player in 97 or 98 but was never in the spotlight and hardly talked about.

Players of today, who haven't even come close to getting these results, seem to have a lot more attention on them compared to these girls and others before them. Perhaps it's just the 'internet age'?
