Re: Ashleigh Barty

Just hope it is not a trend this year. Last year she couldn't win a set and this year:

"1 set Barty"

She hasn't learnt the need to fight coming through juniors where she's usually the aggressor. But a few years on the senior tour should give her a hard lesson about how not to give away cheap points. So far she has surprised her much higher ranked opponents with how well she hits the balls. Then they became less complacent, switched to a higher gear and she couldn't keep up.

Only time will tell whether she can make a successful transition to the WTA tour.

So long...

Re: Ashleigh Barty

Yeah goodpoint, she dominated juniors and won most her matches in straights sets. Another interesting thing is she lost most her matches in straight sets too. Still she has an 62-13 w/l in juniors.

On twitter she wrote: Destroyed. Sorry and thankyou

Taking a set off a high ranked opponent doesn't really seem so impressive when you get bageled and breadsticked afterwards.

100% agree . The most important thing right now is not to over evaluate her abilities. She still has a lot to learn,

Success in Junior and mostly in $25 K is not necessarily a sign for the future.

It will be interesting to see how she does in Pattaya and Kuala Lumpur where she will play with much less pressure.

Let's just say being bageled and breadsticked should be expected when you're a 16 year-old newbie playing an in-form player ranked 15 in the world. So winning a set is impressive. I'm not reading more into it than that. Ash has a long way to go to become a player at Cibulkova's level.

So long...

Re: Ashleigh Barty

I didn't see the match but winning a set is ok for her age, I think.
She has still a lot of things to work on but it's not like she hasn't time for it.

Andrea Petkovic - Sara Errani - Jarka Gajdosova - Alizé Cornet

I didn't watch the match so I thought Cibulkova basically gifted her the set instead of her earning it, but judging by the stats and others reaction it seems well-earned.

It's impressive that she can win a set against someone like Cibulkova who isn't playing badly, and it'd be understandable that at her age right now she maybe cannot keep it up long enough to see the match through; but going from winning a set to winning only a single game in the next two is quite an extreme dip in form.

None of them are questionable in that we aren't blessed with that much depth. And she will no doubt get a stack more over the next three years, which is my concern. Does she need the next French w/c or TA to beg Wimbledon to give her one for the main draw this year? No, make her qualify and to battle players that are not as talented but probably more desperate at this stage.

There's more to life than just being happy.

Yes she played a wonderful set. 15 winners to 10 UE. Next 2 sets she made 11 winners and 30 UE. Served poorly for the whole match though (2 Aces 6 DF 48% 1st serve)

Re: Ashleigh Barty

Ash is one hell of talent, I saw her match on Monday, the fact she has a game to match it with the 15th seed at 16, she really took it too Cibulkova with all her shots and variety. needs to work on her concentration and serve was low. It's still going to be a few years before we get real results from her.
